Madison County Mental Health Department staff announces creation of ‘DJ’s Closet’

Agency planning May 11 bake sale to supply ‘DJ’s Closet’ to provide clients with basic hygiene and household goods

Denise Calcagnino working with interested individuals to create a hygiene and household goods closet for clients; the effort is being made possible with donations from county staff and some clients. Calcagnino hopes to enlist the help of area business, clubs and the public.

“Over my years, one of the barriers or hidden struggles I’ve learned about is the lack of funding our clients receive for these basic necessities,” Calcagnino said. “The cost of toilet paper, laundry soap, sunscreen, shampoo, etc., all comes out of their very limited cash award. We’re excited to announce a plan to open a donation-driven ‘closet’ of household and hygiene products for our clients.

“Being unable to keep yourself clean certainly must contribute to how you feel about yourself, how your children are treated at school and to overall anxiety. I’d like to find a way to bridge this gap, and have some ideas and experience. “

Calcagnino said some details need to be worked out, but the department is working toward a May Day opening; she asks folks to watch for upcoming events for donation drives.

We’re looking for the following new or very gently used products to begin stocking the shelves; donations may be left in the library at any time.

  • Baby wipes
  • Band Aids
  • Combs & brushes
  • Deodorant
  • Dish soap
  • Floor & window cleaners
  • Laundry soap & dryer sheets
  • Lotions
  • Magic Eraser
  • Nail clippers
  • Ponytail holders, barrettes, etc
  • Shampoo & conditioner
  • Shaving cream
  • Soap
  • Sponges & wipes
  • Sunscreen & bug spray
  • Tampons & pads
  • Toilet paper & tissues
  • Toothpaste, brushes and floss

This is a preliminary list; Calcagnino asks people to offer suggestions (no medicines, sharps or food items).
