Tenney’s bipartisan opioid bill passes unanimously out of House Ways and Means Committee
Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-22) announced May 16 that her bipartisan bill, H.R. 5723, the Expanding Oversight of Opioid Prescribing and Payment Act of 2018, passed unanimously out of the House Ways and Means Committee and is awaiting consideration by the full House.
Tenney is one of only two freshman members sponsoring a bill in the comprehensive Ways and Means Committee opioid package.
“Today, we are one step closer to providing our communities and families with the tools necessary to combat the opioid epidemic,” Tenney said. “I’d like to thank Chairman Brady for including the Expanding Oversight of Opioid Prescribing and Payment Act, legislation that I introduced, in today’s Ways and Means Committee mark-up. The bill I’ve introduced will find ways to roll back barriers that have inhibited the use of non-opioid alternatives to treat pain. It’s imperative that we identify current practices preventing the use of non-opioid treatments for pain management and determine incentives that have unintentionally led to the over-prescription of opioids. With 115 deaths from opioid overdoses each day, we know that addiction knows no boundaries. As a member of the Bipartisan Heroin Task Force, I am committed to finding a comprehensive and compassionate solution to reverse the epidemic and empower all who suffer from addiction.”
