DeRuyter woman charged with welfare fraud

Madison County Sheriff’s Office investigators arrested Mary E. Smith, 33, of 704 Utica St., DeRuyter, and charged her with fourth-degree welfare fraud, first-degree offering a false instrument for filing and fourth-degree grand larceny (all class E felonies).

It is alleged that on Dec. 20, 2017, Smith filed an application for public assistance with the Madison County Department of Social Services that contained false information; when Smith filled out the document, she failed to report income.

Due to this fraudulent act, Smith was paid $1,455 in public assistance to which she would not have been entitled.

Smith was arraigned Lenox Town Court and remanded to the Madison County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 bond. She is scheduled to return to Lenox Town Court at a later date to answer the charges.
