Massachusetts man facing charges following early morning I-81 crash in Cicero
State Police in North Syracuse charged Johnathan P. Nowey, 31, of Lee, MA, with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the 3rd degree, a class “D” felony, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle 3rd degree, a misdemeanor, and multiple Vehicle and Traffic Law violations.
On Friday, July 6, 2018, at approximately 8 a.m., Troopers responded to I-81 southbound approximately a mile and a half south of Bartell Road in the town of Cicero for a rollover accident.
Investigation at the scene determined that Johnathan P. Nowey, 31, of Lee, MA, was operating a 2018 Ford F150 southbound on I-81 from Bartell Road when he made an unsafe lane change, and then attempted to move back into the center lane, where he struck a 2010 Honda CRV being operated by Mary Hughes-Hoistion, of Brewerton. The impact caused Hughes-Hoistion’s vehicle to leave the roadway off the west shoulder, and rollover twice.
Hughes-Hoistion and her passenger were transported to Upstate University Hospital to be treated for injuries sustained in the collision. Both are in stable condition.
State Police determined Nowey possesses a suspended New York State Non-Driver ID, and was travelling with three children in the vehicle, ages 12, nine and seven. The seven-year-old was not in a restrained in a booster seat. The children were not injured in the collision and were turned over to a family member at the scene. Further investigation revealed the pickup truck Nowey was driving was stolen from a family member in Lee, Mass.
Nowey was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released into State Police custody.
Nowey was charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 3rd degree, a class “D” felony,
Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle 3rd degree, a misdemeanor, and the following Vehicle and Traffic Law violations: Unlicensed operator, Speed not reasonable and prudent, Unsafe lane change, No seat belt, Improper backseat passenger restraint. Nowey was transported to the Onondaga County Justice Center to await Centralized Arraignment.
State Police were assisted at the scene by NAVAC and Brewerton Fire Department.
