Discover ‘Company K’ at OPL’s Great War book discussion in July

This month’s selection from the great books about the Great War is William March’s searing novel “Company K,” and Dr. Roxanna Pisiak, humanities professor at Morrisville State College, will lead the discussion of the book on Thursday, July 19, at 7:00 p.m.

March’s novel, published in 1933 to critical acclaim, is loosely based on March’s own experiences as an infantry soldier in the American Expeditionary Force in France during the desperate 1918 German offensive. March reveals the experiences of an American Marine company at the Front through the short, vivid recollections of each member of the company, creating a kaleidoscopic narrative that somehow makes coherent tragic sense.

Future sessions of the OPL’s Great War and Writings from the Front discussion series will focus on Mary Borden’s autobiographical stories about an American nurse’s experiences at the Front as collected in “The Forbidden Zone” (Aug. 16); and Siegfried Sassoon’s autobiographical novel “Memoirs of an Infantry Officer,  (Sept. 20).

Copies of “Company K” can be made available for those who register for the discussion group at the OPL circulation desk. For more information, stop by the Oneida Library, 220 Broad St., or call (315) 363-3050.
