Speak Out Central New York issues statement in response to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s lawsuit to overturn state and local tax provisions of TrumpTax

Speak Out Central New York issued the following statement in response to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s announcement that New York and three other states are suing the federal government to overturn the TrumpTax’s $10,000 cap on local and state tax deductions:

“Governor Cuomo and A.G. Underwood are right to fight back against the TrumpTax,” said Speak Out CNY Spokesman Will Brunelle. “While any attempt to limit the ability of the TrumpTax to punish working families in New York is a step in the right direction, simply overturning the law’s cap on state and local tax deductions would still leave us with a law that overwhelmingly rewards the richest fraction of the country with massive tax breaks while hitting working families in New York and across the nation with higher costs and less economic opportunity.

“Our own members of Congress, John Katko and Claudia Tenney, should never have voted for this law, which gives more than 80 percent of its benefits to the richest 1 percent of the country. Since its passage, job growth in Central New York has stagnated, and worker pay nationwide has remained the same or even decreased, as corporations rake in billions in savings.

“The TrumpTax is nothing short of a scam, designed to funnel as much wealth as possible into the coffers of wealthy corporations and campaign donors, and away from working families. We need to fight back against this bad deal – the entire thing needs to go.”
