Great Swamp Conservancy to host federal duck stamp art exhibit

The GSC will exhibit the original artwork of the 2017 winners of the Federal Duck Stamp Contest from Aug. 20 through 26, 2018. In 1934, Jay N. “Ding” Darling had an idea to create a revenue stamp to be purchased by hunters, and use the proceeds to buy disappearing habitat.

With the support of sportsmen, the Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp, or the “duck stamp,” as it’s commonly known, was started. The dedicated conservationists and collectors who purchase the stamp, have made the Federal Duck Stamp one of our nation’s most successful conservation programs.

Duck stamp sales have provided $700 million that has been used to purchase 5.2 million wetland acres for the National Wildlife Refuge System. Within the towns of Lenox and Sullivan, approximately 5,000 acres of wetlands have been restored through Federal programs with the Great Swamp Conservancy’s assistance.

This exhibit is free and open to the public during normal business hours, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The GSC is located at 8375 N. Main St., Canastota. For more information, call 315.697.2950.
