Women’s Hockey Ranked Fifth in Nation in First USCHO Poll

Coming off the best season in program history, the Colgate Women’s Hockey team has been ranked fifth in the country in the first USCHO poll of the 2018-19 season.

The defending national runner-up earned 91 points in the original poll, which was well ahead of conference rival Cornell, who earned 56 points for the sixth best ranking. Clarkson, who defeated Colgate in the ECAC and national championship games last season, earned the top spot in the country and earned 14 of 15 first-place votes. Boston College, who is ranked fourth in the country, received the other first-place vote.

Three other ECAC teams received votes in the poll. St. Lawrence was just outside the top-10 and Princeton and Harvard both received votes as well to give the conference the most teams earning votes in the country with six.

Seventh-year head coach Greg Fargo’s Raiders went 34-6-1 last year and climbed as high as number two in the country in the weekly poll. This season, Colgate returns two of their top-five scorers in Jessie Eldridge and Shae Labbe and starting goalie Julia Vandyk.

The Raiders play their only exhibition game Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. against Shenzhen KRS Vanke Rays of the CWHL at Class of 1965 Arena. They open the regular season on Sept. 28 in Hamilton against Penn State at 6 p.m.
