October Events at the Canastota Public Library

October is a busy month at the library.  The library has scheduled several presentations, the start of our regular children’s programming and our Annual Friends of the Library Book Sale.

Our children’s story hours begin again in October for eleven weeks.  Baby & Me Lapsit with Miss Angela is an introduction to the library for children from birth to age 24 months.  Baby & Me Lapsit will begin October 10 and be scheduled through December 19.  The program is for babies and their caregivers and is held each Wednesday beginning at 10am.  On Thursdays, preschoolers enjoy Storytime with Mrs. Liz at 10am.  In this program, children will enjoy read-aloud stories, songs, crafts and a snack.  Storytime will be held October 11 through December 20.

Join us on Wednesday, Oct 3 at 6pm for Cooking with Ang.  Angela Rigler will provide some food swaps for healthy meals that you can add to your family’s menu this autumn.  Food swaps will include delicious options like BBQ Sandwiches made with shredded carrots and Chinese Chicken that is actually made with cauliflower replacing the chicken.  A hearty parmesan zucchini will round out the selection for this taste-fest at the library.  You will leave this presentation with healthy recipes and lots of fun kitchen tips.

On Wednesday, October 10 at 7pm, Dina Evans will talk about reiki.  Reiki is a Japanese healing art that harnesses the body’s energy through the use of a healer’s hands to focus heat and energy on the places that need attention to promote healing.  Reiki Master Evans will talk about the history of reiki and her own experiences with this technique of spiritual healing.  Evans is the owner of DME Reiki and Wellness Center on Canal Street in the village.

The second Canalside Talk for this season is scheduled for Thursday, October 25 at 7pm.  “A Soldier’s Journey through the Heart of the Park” tells the story of SGT. John Salvatore Taibi, a World War II veteran, and his trip from Utica to Lake Placid on the New York Central Railroad, now the Adirondack Scenic Railroad.  Sgt. Taibi and other veterans from World War II were sent to Lake Placid to acclimate to normal life after living as Prisoners of War overseas.  John Ralph Taibi, Sgt Taibi’s son, is well known for his knowledge of trains and local railroads.  Come and take this whimsical journey with Taibi through the Adirondacks in the 1940’s as John tells his father’s story.

The Friends of the Library holds their Annual Friends Book Sale October 25, 26 and 27 in the entire lower level of the library. There will be a great selection of fiction and non-fiction books, DVDs, audio books, music CDs and more.  A special “Friends of the Library” preview will be held on Wednesday afternoon and evening.  The sale is open to the public Thursday through Saturday during regular library hours.  The prices on all merchandise is very reasonable and Saturday features a bag sale!  The Friends of the Library is a wonderful group of volunteers who help to prepare and work this sale.  As well, the organization receives help and support from Ralston Supply Company who provide the tables needed to hold this event.  If you are interested in donating books or helping with this event, please call the library for more information.

The library will be closed Monday, Oct. 8, in honor of Columbus Day.  The Canastota Public Library is located at 102 W. Center Street in Canastota and has been providing services to the community since 1896.
