ENHS announces discovery of missing headstones

The Erieville–Nelson Heritage Society will hold a ceremony dedicating a new sign commemorating those buried in the historical Temple Cemetery at Erieville Reservoir dam at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21.

The ceremony will be held at the site across from the intersection of Hardscrabble and Erieville Road on the dam.

The sign lists the known burials from 1812 to 1848, a list compiled by an anonymous author and the only existing record of the cemetery. The stones were removed sometime in the 1930s or ‘40s and the whereabouts were unknown until a recent discovery.

An added bonus to the new sign commemorating the historic Temple Cemetery is the recent discovery of 10 stones belonging to the cemetery, five of which are readable. All are welcome to attend the ceremony and hear more of the story of the Temple Cemetery and the newly found stones.
