Brindisi announces grant for historic Rome church

First Baptist Church awarded $25,000 for bell tower restoration

Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi today announced the First Baptist Church of Rome has been awarded $25,000 from the New York Landmarks Conservancy for the restoration of its bell tower.

The matching grant was awarded under the Conservancy’s Sacred Sites Program, which provides congregations of all denominations across New York with assistance with needed repairs to allow them to continue using their buildings.

“First Baptist Church is a historic landmark in Rome, and it continues to be an active congregation that contributes to the quality of life in the Mohawk Valley region,” Brindisi said. “The Sacred Sites Program has been an excellent resource for congregations in our area and beyond to make building improvements they might otherwise not be able to afford.”

In recent years, other recipients of the Conservancy’s Sacred Sites grants have included Tabernacle Baptist and Grace Episcopal Churches in Utica. The organization has awarded grants to over 780 houses of worship in New York, supporting nearly $740 million in repair and renovation projects. The Conservancy, a private, nonprofit organization, also provides technical help and workshops for building caretakers, and publications on the maintenance and preservation of older houses of worship.
