COLUMN: Events of Historical Note 2018-19

On Saturday, Nov. 3, at 2 p.m. the Cazenovia Public Library will continue their series of programs entitled “America during World War I.” This week will feature a special presentation entitled “Becoming Doughboys: Life in the Training Camp.” More information to come. On Sunday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m. the Madison County Historical Society will have its annual luncheon and meeting at the Hip Stir Cafe in Oneida. The lunch will include choices of beef pot roast, baked chicken or a vegan dish served with mashed potatoes and carrots. Dessert will feature chocolate cake coffee and tea. Tickets for the annual luncheon are $20. Reservations are required by Oct. 30. On Monday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. the Fabius Historical Society will host a special presentation by Town of Sullivan Historian Mike Beardsley at the Fabius Community Center. Beardsley will present “Underground Novelties.A Humorous History of the American Casket.” Light refreshments will be served following the event. On Tuesday, Nov. 6, the Pompey Historical Society will be holding their annual Election Day, Bake Sale at the Pompey Town Hall. On Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. the Fort Plain Museum and Historical Park will continue its 2018 fall lecture series, this week featuring the presentation “The Fate of General Burgoyne’s Army” by Larry Arnold. The presentation will focus on the fate of the British Army after they surrendered. Arnold has spent 16 years working at the Saratoga National Historical Park as a volunteer, Seasonal Park Ranger and one of only two Licensed Battlefield Guides. Arnold is a past president of the Friends of the Saratoga Battlefield and sits on the Friends of the New York State Military Museum’s advisory board. Light refreshments will be served. On Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 6:30 p.m. the Morrisville Public Library will host a special presentation by Art Zimmer entitled “A Virtual Walk through Downtown Hamilton in 1950.” This will be a fun walk down memory lane to see what businesses in Hamilton over 60 years ago. Zimmer moved to Hamilton in 1948 and will talk about how changes in society have influenced the changes in the business makeup of downtown Hamilton. There is no charge for this event. On Saturday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. the Oneida Public Library will host a presentation entitled “Over There: America on the Western Front.” Local historian and lecturer Tom Henry will talk about the American Expeditionary Forces’ role on the western front in the last year of WWI during the Allies’ counter.offensive against the German armies. On Saturday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m. the Oneida County History Center will host a special “Veterans Day, Show and Tell.” Hosted by Joe Kelly, this event encourages attendees to bring an old photograph, personal artifact, or other memorabilia from a veteran in your family or community. Items can be personal or service related from the American Revolution through present day. Those who plan to “show and tell” are encouraged to arrive early to sign up for a time slot. Time slots will be filled on a first come, first serve basis and presenters will have 3.5 minutes depending on the number of people to sign up. There is no charge for this event. On Saturday, Nov. 10, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. the Onondaga Historical Association, Syracuse Regional Airport Authority and the Hancock family are hosting the grand opening of the new airport and Regional Aviation History Museum at “Come Fly With Me.A Sky High Gala” presented by Hancock Estabrook, LLP. This black.tie optional event will include tours, cocktails, an elegant dinner and an entertaining program on the history of the airport by Onondaga Historical Association Curator of History Robert Searing. On Sunday, Nov. 11, 1918 at 2 p.m. the Oneida Public Library in Collaboration with the Oneida Community Mansion House presents “Armistice: A Pageant in Voices.” The play is composed of local newspaper accounts and letters and it tells the tales of Madison County folk caught up in the war effort of 1917.1918. It will also present the popular music of the time that was composed as morale boosters for the folks at home and the soldiers on the western front. Admission is $5 per adult as a donation to the Oneida Community Mansion House. The production is supported by a Community Arts grant from CNY Arts.

On Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. the Rome Historical Society will host a special presentation by Don Cazentre entitled “Spirits and Cocktails of Upstate New York: A History. Food and beverage writer Don Cazentre will share his research from his popular book of the same name. Following the program Cazentre will sign copies of his book. On Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. the Fort Plain Museum and Historical Park will continue its 2018 fall lecture series, this week featuring the presentation “The American Way of War from the Revolution to World War I” by Edward G. Lengel, PhD. Lengel will look at the unique idea of the “American Way of War” from George Washington to General John J. Pershing and how it influenced US history. Lengel directed the Washington Papers Project at the University of Virginia for many years. He served as the Chief Historian of the White House Historical Association from 2016.2018 and has authored several books. Light refreshments will be served. A $5 donation is suggested.
