Trees along the trails of Rogers Center may appear bare during winter, but in reality, there are many ways to identify trees even without their leaves. December’s ‘Learning Lectures’ and ‘EdVentures’ will teach visitors how to recognize trees in the winter. Photo courtesy Friends of Rogers

‘Learning Lectures’ and ‘EdVentures’ are ‘TREE-mendous’ in December

Friends of Rogers continues offering expanded programming at Rogers Environmental Education Center in Sherburne. Explore a specific topic with an experienced expert in a casual atmosphere during ‘Learning Lectures,’ and go outside for a fun, hand’s-on educational experience with ‘EdVentures.’ For the month of December, SUNY Morrisville assistant professor Rebecca Hargrave leads both sessions, allowing participants to focus on the beauty of trees in winter.

“Know the Forest from the Trees” continues the ‘Learning Lecture’ series on December 5 at 6:30 pm. Participants will learn how to use leaves, bark, fruits, shape, smell, and more to identify various tree species. During “Find the Trees within the Forest” on December 8 at 1:30 pm, visitors will use winter tree identification techniques to distinguish between different species during a guided hike. Note that this ‘EdVenture’ will be held on a Saturday afternoon for better visibility of the trees.

“If you take a closer look, trees aren’t really bare in winter,” said Friends of Rogers Senior Educator Marissa Nolan. “Bark, branches, buds, and shape provide many clues to help determine the species.”

‘Learning Lectures’ and ‘EdVentures’ are recommended for ages 13 and up. Sessions meet at the Visitor Center, just off state Route 80. Individual registration is $4 per member and $5 for not-yet-members and family registration is $10 for those who are Friends of Rogers members and $12 for those who are not-yet-members. Paid pre-registration is suggested by noon the day prior; call (607) 674-4733, or email sr.educator@FriendsofRogers.org for more details.

Rogers Center is operated by Friends of Rogers Environmental Education Center, Inc., a nonprofit organization that offers educational programs for people of all ages. Seasonal hours are from  10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
