Journey to Alaska with Wells Horton

Central New York landscape photographer Wells Horton will take you on a journey cross-country to Alaska. His adventure has captured many scenic panoramas and rarely seen wildlife.

The presentation is free and open to the public. Donations are always appreciated to help support the GSC’s conservation efforts.

This truly is an Alaskan adventure that you will never forget, and you don’t even have to leave New York state; just come to the Great Swamp Conservancy at 1 p.m. Jan. 12.

GSC launches shoe drive fundraiser to raise money for environmental education

The GSC is conducting a shoe drive from Jan. 14 through March 14, 2019, to raise funds for environmental educational programs. The GSC will earn funds based on the total weight of the pairs of gently worn, used and new shoes collected.

Funds2Orgs will issue a check for the collected shoes. Those dollars will benefit the community. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used and new shoes at the GSC main office.

All donated shoes will be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of small business partners. Funds2Orgs works with micro-entrepreneurs in helping them create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited. Proceeds from the sales of the shoes collected in shoe drive fundraisers are used to feed, clothe and house their families.

One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send to her son to law school.

“We are excited about our shoe drive,” said Rusty Patane, assistant director. “We know that most people have extra shoes in their closets, and they would like to donate them to the GSC. By doing so, we raise money for the various educational programs that we offer, and we have the chance to help families in developing nations who need economic opportunities. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

By donating gently worn, used and new shoes to the GSC, the shoes will be given a second chance and make a difference in people’s lives around the world.

The GSC is a 501(c)(3) nature center dedicated to educating children and adults about the necessity to protect and nurture the few remaining wild/green spaces in our local area, to teach children the need for biodiversity and to appreciate and enjoy the beauty of the out of doors. The GSC brings a combination of educational, cultural, recreational and social elements based on nature, history and art to our community. Programs are geared toward helping children to develop a sense of community with and value for the natural environment. We at the GSC are committed to the belief that children who have a positive experience with nature are more likely to become adults who are stewards of Mother Earth.

We are committed to reducing, reusing and recycling in any way we can. For more information contact Rusty Patane at 315.697.2950 or greatswampconservancy@gmail.com.
