Canastota man charged with welfare fraud

On Jan. 11, 2019, at 1:25 p.m., Madison County Sheriff’s Office Investigators arrested Zachary C. Bazan, 34, of Canastota, and charged him with fourth-degree welfare fraud, first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, fourth-degree grand larceny (all class E felonies); third-degree perjury, fifth-degree welfare fraud and petit larceny (all class A misdemeanors).

Bazan was receiving public assistance from the Madison County Department of Social Services. It is alleged that he filed documentation with DSS, which failed to report income that he was receiving from employment. Police say as a result of this fraudulent act, Bazan received $884.50 between Nov. 9, 2017, and March 31, 2018; and $1,683 between March 1, 2018, and Nov. 30, 2018, for which he would not have been eligible if he provided social services with accurate information.

Bazan was issued an appearance ticket directing him to appear in Lenox Town Court Feb. 26, 2019.

Syracuse woman charged with forgery

On Jan. 12, 2019, at 3 p.m., Madison County Sheriff’s Office investigators arrested Robin S. Tobin, 58, of Syracuse, and charged her with second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument (class D felony) and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing (class E felony).

It is alleged that when Tobin applied for public assistance, she filed a forged document containing false information.

Tobin was arraigned in Sullivan Town Court where she was released on her own recognizance; she is scheduled to return to Lenox Town Court Jan. 22 to answer the charges.
