Madison County Emergency Management wants to make sure residents are prepared for freezing rain and possible icing conditions. The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a Weather Advisory for Madison County. Freezing rain is expected to begin at noon today 10 p.m. tonight.

The freezing rain is expected to cause icy conditions, especially in the higher elevations.

Madison County Emergency Management is urging residents to remain safe during this time. Freezing rain can cause hazardous road conditions. Remember to look for black ice and to drive carefully.

Freezing rain also coats all surfaces, including power lines. Here are some tips for you to remember if the power goes out:

  • Keep a number of working flashlights and extra supply of batteries in your home
  • Be sure to charge your phone before the storm
  • If a power outage occurs call the electric company and report the outage
  • Never touch downed power lines
  • Generators used to supply power during an outage must be operated outdoors to prevent the buildup of carbon monoxide
  • If the power goes out for a length of time please check on elderly family members, neighbors or those who may need assistance during the outage
