Library to present “Dinosaur Dig” workshop for children Feb. 20

The Cazenovia Public Library will welcome field paleontologists Mike and Roberta Straka to the community room at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, to present “Dinosaur Dig”—a scientific exploration workshop for children ages five and up.

During the interactive program, participants will learn about fossils and work in an indoor dig site to reveal real dinosaur bones.

The program will begin with a 30-minute interactive fossil talk to prepare the junior paleontologists for the dig. During the talk, Mike will discuss how and where to find fossils, and he will share several amazing fossil discoveries from the time of the dinosaurs to the time of the ice age.

Following the presentation, Roberta will take participants on an exciting dig. She will help the children to identify the bones and place the fossils on a Triceratops cutout. After the dig, participants will have time to examine a fossil collection featuring rare and unusual specimens.

The Strakas have conducted and managed paleontological digs in North and South Dakota since 1978; each year, they teach paleontology and geology in schools and libraries throughout New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Registration is requested. Call or stop by the library to reserve a spot. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Izaak Walton League Young Naturalists Program Series continues Feb. 22

The Cazenovia Public Library will partner with the Izaak Walton League to present the next installment of the Young Naturalists program series. The engaging, hands-on programs are designed to get young people interested in science and connected to conservation and outdoor recreation. Participants (ages 7 and up) will become citizen scientists and learn about local ecology through activities, art projects and books. The next session, titled “Ice Fishing,” will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in the Community Room.

The Izaak Walton League was founded in 1922 by 54 avid anglers dedicated to conserving outdoor America for future generations. The environmental organization is named after Izaak Walton, the 17th century author of The Compleat Angler—a classic book about the art and spirit of fishing. The League is one of the first conservation organizations to set forth an aggressive course of action to defend wild America by changing public policy. During the program, participants will learn the basics of ice fishing and study the fish found in CNY lakes.

Library to present “Introduction to Sculpture” workshop with local artist Paul Parpard Feb. 23

The Cazenovia Public Library will continue its “Warming up to Winter” program series with an Introduction to Sculpture workshop with local artist Paul Parpard. The three-hour program will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, in the Community Room. A $20 fee will be charged per participant (ages 16 and up).

Parpard earned an M.F.A. from Syracuse University, where he went on to teach visual communications, communication design, advertising design, and computer graphic design. In 2018, he received a CNY Arts Grant to create a commemorative clay bust of Cazenovia’s founder, John Lincklaen. The grant is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts. An important aspect of the project is public education. Parpard is thrilled to invite the Cazenovia community to join him on his artistic journey.
