{"id":102436,"date":"2019-03-22T19:02:38","date_gmt":"2019-03-22T23:02:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=102436"},"modified":"2019-03-22T10:05:44","modified_gmt":"2019-03-22T14:05:44","slug":"utica-municipal-housing-authority-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=102436","title":{"rendered":"Utica Municipal Housing Authority news"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UMHA plans programs at Utica Public Library <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Eating healthy on a budget workshop slated for March 25<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/29136358_301668223693871_8412908276420706304_n.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-97873\" srcset=\"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/29136358_301668223693871_8412908276420706304_n.png 200w, https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/29136358_301668223693871_8412908276420706304_n-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In conjunction with the North County Region Eat Smart New\nYork, the Utica Municipal Housing Authority AmeriCorps program will hold a workshop\non \u201cEating Healthy on a Budget\u201d from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 25, at the\nUtica Public Library, 303 Genesee St., Utica, in the second-floor music room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants will learn how to stretch their food dollars,\nplan and prepare easy meals and make healthy food choices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rides are available to the workshop from locations in the\nUtica area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many families and individuals in the area would like to\nlearn to make healthy eating a part of their total lifestyle but have to live\nwithin tight household budgets. This workshop is designed to help people make food\nchoices that are affordable, nutritional and set the foundation for lifelong\nhealthy habits. It will provide tips and activities to help households plan,\npurchase and prepare healthy meals. As part of the workshop, participant will\nlearn how to make and taste a sampling of a carrot raisin salad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Eat Smart New York Nutrition Education program provides\nskill-based nutrition education classes in local communities on a variety of\ntopics like: healthy eating on a budget, smart shopping for vegetables and\nfruit, healthy meal planning, basic cooking and food safety skills, weight\ncontrol and physical activity. The goals of the Eat Smart New York program are\nto eat more fruits and vegetables, drink fewer sugar-sweetened beverages, exercise\nmore and balance calories eaten as part of a healthy lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AmeriCorps members will be available at the workshop to help\nparticipants connect to various community programs and qualify for services. The\nUtica Municipal Housing Authority provides financial literacy, job search,\nhousing, health education and veteran services to help people succeed and have\na better life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Make your college dreams come true workshop March 26<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local residents can learn how to enter college, higher\neducation, and certificate programs at a workshop from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.\nTuesday, March 26, also in the second-floor music room at the Utica Public\nLibrary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshop entitled, \u201cMake Your College Dreams Come True: College,\nJob Training and Certificate programs for Youth and Adults,\u201d is sponsored by\nthe Utica Municipal Housing Authority and OnPoint for College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshop is free and open to the public. Refreshments\nwill be served. Parking is in the rear. Reservations are encouraged and should\nbe made by calling 315.735.3362, ext. 25 or 315.982.3731.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshop will cover the following topics: deciding upon\ncareers, different types of college and certificate programs, the college\nadmission process and financial aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Housing Authority staff will discuss available local job\ntraining and apprenticeship programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Point for College Utica, in less than six years, has\nhelped transform the lives of 1,700 low-income, first-generation youth and\nyounger adults forward their educational dreams. Through the program, refugees,\ninner city residents, single moms, foster care, youth homeless and others\ncommunity residents in need are able to access and succeed in college and get\nlinked to good local jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Point for College teams up with area organizations,\ncolleges and businesses to help empower students to overcome the challenges they\nface in their education journey from application to graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The speaker will be Lisa Monteiro who lives in Utica and is\nan On Point for College Utica advisor.
