The session will combine book discussion, games, and hands-on\ncreative activities. The group will discuss The Wild Robot (2016) by award-winning\nauthor and illustrator Peter Brown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The novel tells the story of the robot Roz, who finds herself\nalone on a remote, wild island. She does not know how she got there or what her\npurpose is, but she knows she must survive. Her only hope is to adapt to her surroundings\nand learn from the island\u2019s hostile animal inhabitants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The junior book club is open to children ages 9-12. Books are\navailable at the circulation desk. All events at the Cazenovia Public Library are\nfree and open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information, call 315.655.9322 or visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cazenoviapubliclibrary.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cazenoviapubliclibrary.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Rock and roll concert April 5, 2019<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cazenovia Public Library will present a special concert by\nGary Frenay and Arty Lenin at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 5, in the Community Room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the course of their 40-year musical partnership, the pair\nhas been known by several names: the Flashcubes (new wave\/rock and roll), Screen\nTest (dance-pop), the Neverly Brothers Band (oldies rock) and The FabCats (formerly\nthe Fab Five). Frenay and Lenin were inducted into the Syracuse Area Music Hall\nof Fame as individuals in 2006 and as a band in 2012. They have also been honored\nwith the SAMMY Awards for Best Acoustic Act, Best Singer\/Songwriter (Gary, twice),\nBest Rock Instrumentalist (Arty) and Best Rock Album (The Flashcubes). The pair\u2019s\nmusical repertoire includes more than 1,500 songs spanning a variety of styles.\nTheir combination of experience and spontaneity allows them to create a unique musical\nperformance for any audience of any age. The April 5 performance will feature songs\nfrom 1969.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>LEGO building session for kids April 8<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cazenovia Public Library invites children ages 5 and older\nto the Community Room at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, April 8, to channel their inner architects\nand get building! Museum educator Pat Hill will lead \u201cLEGO My Library,\u201d a fun, hands-on\nprogram for young builders. Participants will have access to the Library\u2019s vast\ncollection of LEGO construction toys. The program will feature a \u201czoo building\u201d\nchallenge and time for creative construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Library is a place of imagination and discovery. Programs\nlike \u201cLEGO My Library\u201d allow children to socialize, be creative, and see their imaginings\ncome to life. Construction toys offer significant educational benefits to children\nof all ages. Not only is hands-on play fun and exciting, but it also helps to develop\nmotor and spatial skills, ingenuity, critical thinking, social and language\nproficiencies and more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Great Minds Lecture: \u201cPeter Singer and Ethics Today\u201d April 9<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cazenovia College is pleased to announce the continuation of\nits Faculty Library Lecture Series: Great Minds\/Great Ideas, at 7 p.m. Tuesday,\nApril 9, in the Cazenovia Public Library Community Room. This popular series features\nnoted Cazenovia College faculty members who \u201cdiscuss the lives and work of important\nthinkers who opened doors of opportunity for the human spirit\u201d (cazenovia.edu\/greatminds).\nThe upcoming installment, presented by Dr. Michael Sanders, associate professor\nof philosophy, is titled \u201cJust What Do We Owe Each Other? Peter Singer and Ethics\nToday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peter Singer is among the most famous contemporary advocates\nof utilitarian philosophy, the idea that we should ultimately do what produces the\nmost happiness for the greatest number. He is also one of the more controversial\nphilosophers living today. A staunch critic of modern, consumer culture, Singer\nconsistently questions society\u2019s fixation on materialistic success and its, at times,\ndisastrous effects on people, animals and the environment. In his recent works,\nhe has called on people to rethink their obligations to others and has stressed\nthe moral necessity\u2014especially of those in developed nations\u2014of taking concrete\nsteps to reduce suffering in the world when we can. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Great Mind\/Great Ideas Library Lecture Series is made possible\nthrough the generous support of Pat Stacy Healey, Class of 1962, and Helen Stacy.\nFor more information, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cazenovia.edu\/greatminds\">cazenovia.edu\/greatminds<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Library to host Erie Canal story-telling event April 11<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cazenovia Public Library will host a presentation titled\n\u201cTales from the Dry Docks: Mules, Boats &amp; Blacksmiths\u201d at 7 p.m. on Thursday,\nApril 11, in the Community Room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mike Allen, resident blacksmith and interpreter at the Chittenango\nLanding Canal Boat Museum, will share fascinating stories about Chittenango Landing,\nthe Erie Canal and the people and animals that made it work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum is located within the\nOld Erie Canal State Historic Park. The dry dock at Chittenango Landing was built\nin 1855. There, craftsmen constructed and repaired the 96-foot long cargo boats\nthat transported grain, lumber, coal and produce from western to eastern markets.\nThe museum explores the construction of these canal boats and the workings of the\nrestored dry docks, as well as some of the social history of the canal era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Bumblebee film April 12<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cazenovia Public Library will present the science fiction\naction film Bumblebee (2018) at 3:15 and 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 12, in the Community\nRoom. The film centers on the Transformers character of the same name. It is the\nsixth installment of the live-action Transformers film series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the run in 1987, Bumblebee seeks refuge in a junkyard in a\nsmall California beach town. Charlie, a teenager trying to find her place in the\nworld, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him,\nshe realizes he is no ordinary yellow VW bug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The film is rated PG-13 and runs 114 minutes. Free popcorn provided.\nThis event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Mother Goose Tea April 13<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preschoolers and their families are invited to the Cazenovia\nPublic Library for a Mother Goose Tea celebrating the stories and rhymes we all\nknow and love. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April\n13 in the Community Room. The program will feature stories, refreshments,\nactivities and a visit from Cazenovia College\u2019s miniature horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Young Naturalists program series continues April 15<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cazenovia Public Library will partner with the Izaak\nWalton League to present the Young Naturalists program series for children ages\nseven and older. The engaging, hands-on programs are designed to get young\npeople interested in science and connected to conservation and outdoor\nrecreation. The next program\u2014titled \u201cGot Dirt? The Hidden Life of Insects in\nSoil\u201d\u2014will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, April 15, in the Community Room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program will explore the ways in which the critters in\nthe soil help the Earth. Participants will make worm and dirt pudding and head\noutside to dig around for insects. Children are encouraged to dress for the\nweather and to get dirty. Registration is requested. This program is sponsored\nby the Friends of the Cazenovia Public Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Izaak Walton League was founded in 1922 by 54 avid\nanglers dedicated to conserving outdoor America for future generations. The\nenvironmental organization is named after Izaak Walton, the 17th century author\nof The Compleat Angler\u2014a classic book about the art and spirit of fishing. The\nLeague is one of the first conservation organizations to set forth an\naggressive course of action to defend wild America by changing public policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Young Naturalists and NYS Parks will partner to present an\nEarth Day event on April 22 at Clark Reservation State Park, 6105 E Seneca\nTurnpike, Jamesville. Young Naturalist participants from all libraries are\ninvited to attend. Participants will complete a birdcall craft before heading\nout on a hike to learn all about the park\u2019s birds. Questions may be directed to Tess Southern at\n(315) 684-3001 ext 101.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>A Dog\u2019s Way Home to be screened April 19<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cazenovia Public Library will present the 2019 family\nadventure film A Dog\u2019s Way Home at 1 and 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 19, in the\nCommunity Room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a dog becomes separated from her beloved owner, she\nembarks on an epic 400-mile journey through the Colorado wilderness to find\nhim. Along the way, the dog touches the lives of an orphaned mountain lion, a\ndown-on-his-luck veteran and some friendly strangers. The film is rated PG and\nruns 96 minutes. Free popcorn provided. Presenter Laura\nMarkley will discuss the impacts of plastic pollution and everyday waste\nreduction strategies. Her lecture is titled \u201cWaste Not: A Deep Dive into Waste\nReduction, First Steps and the Science Behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Markley is a second year PhD student at Syracuse University\nin the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. She is studying the\nimpacts of plastic on human and environmental health. Markley is the founder\nand operator of Waste-Free PhD, a website tackling scientific misinformation\nand providing tips on minimal waste living (wastefreephd.com\/).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During her presentation, Markley will discuss the ways in\nwhich plastic pollution and waste can impact public health and the health of\nthe oceans and other natural ecosystems. She will also explore ways in which we\ncan all better utilize our resources, save money and slowly minimize our waste.\nAccording to Markley, making a change can start at home and within our\ncommunities. Small changes can influence not only the people around us, but\nalso the businesses that want to thrive in the sustainable economy of the\nfuture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Spring break Explorer Days April 17, 18 and 19<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking for kid-friendly activities over the school break?\nHead to the Cazenovia Public Library for three fun and educational \u201cExplorer\nDay\u201d events. Museum Educators Pat Hill\nand Julie Shotzberger invite children ages 6-11 to the Library Museum for a\nspecial workshop based on the Library\u2019s \u201cFashion Takes Flight\u201d exhibit. The\nprogram will explore the popularity of feathers in 19th century fashion. This\ntrend led hat makers around the world to produce large, extravagant hats\nfeaturing not only feathers, but also entire birds, nests and eggs. The\nphenomenon resulted in the devastation of several bird species and changed the\nlives of tenement workers responsible for creating feather accessories.\nParticipants will learn how these over-the-top fashions led to the formation of\nthe Audubon society and the enactment of laws to protect bird populations.\nDuring the workshop, children will have the chance to create a\nVictorian-inspired, feather-adorned hat, a paper birdcage and a snowy egret\nfeather collage.<\/li><li><em>\u201cKnow Your\nFish\u201d at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 18<\/em>. James Everard, an aquatic\nbiologist for New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, will\nlead an exploration into the fish of NYS. He will teach participants how to\nidentify local species of fish and discuss the different senses that fish use\nto survive and find food. The presentation will feature hands-on crafts and\nlearning activities. Meet in the Community Room.<\/li><li><em>Everson\nMuseum program: \u201cThe Art of the Tile\u201d at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 19<\/em>.\nChildren ages 8-14 will learn about the history of ceramic tiles and have the\nopportunity to create their own tiles out of dry clay and to paint the surface\nwith a glitzy paint called Jazz Gloss. The program is inspired by the Everson\nMuseum\u2019s past exhibit \u201cThe Art of the Tile.\u201d Ceramic tiles are one of the\nworld\u2019s oldest decorative forms, dating back to at least the fourth millennium\nBCE. Over the centuries, tiles have served both an ornamental and functional\npurpose, covering interior and exterior building surfaces as well as tabletops\nand other pieces of furniture with abstract designs, geometric patterns and\npictorial scenes ranging from simple to elaborate. Their diversity and relative\naffordability led them to become popular collectibles in the twentieth century.\n\u201cThe Art of the Tile\u201d explores the tiles in the Everson\u2019s international\nceramics collection, most of which are American works made during the last two\ncenturies.
