New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli and Onondaga\nCounty District Attorney William J. Fitzpatrick announced the arrest of Geddes\nAccount Clerk Shannon Carhart for allegedly pocketing $30,000 in a health care\ncoverage scam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carhart, 43, of Syracuse, enrolled in the town\u2019s health\ninsurance after telling officials and falsifying records that she had declined\nthe coverage in order to fraudulently receive $6,000 from the town meant for\nemployees who opted out of health insurance coverage. In addition, Carhart cost\nthe town another $30,000 by failing to pay her actual health insurance premiums\nand leaving the town to pay the bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMs. Carhart hoodwinked Geddes town officials and altered\nreports to cover up her theft,\u201d DiNapoli said. \u201cThanks to our partnership with\nOnondaga County District Attorney William J. Fitzpatrick, we were able to\nreveal her scam. We will continue to work with law enforcement across New York\nto protect taxpayers\u2019 money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cProtecting taxpayer money has been a priority since I first\ntook office,\u201d Fitzpatrick said. \u201cWe appreciate our working partnerships with\nstate agencies that help us ferret out fraud and theft. My office has always\nhad a strong relationship with the New York State Comptroller\u2019s Office.\n Comptroller DiNapoli continues to be a zealous watchdog for taxpayers and\nof public money and I look forward to working with him in the years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carhart was charged with third-degree grand larceny, first-degree\nfalsifying business records and official misconduct. She was arraigned\nWednesday. She is on paid administrative leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
