The Canastota Central District Board of Education appointed Shawn\nBissetta as its next superintendent of schools April 23, 2019. The board\nselected Bissetta after a multi-step review of candidates and thoughtful\ndeliberation. He will begin his new role July 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bissetta serves as the superintendent of Oxford Academy and\nCentral Schools in Chenango County, a position he has held since 2015. Prior to\nthat role, he served as superintendent of Mount Markham Central Schools for\nnearly two years. He served as the junior-senior high school principal in Port\nByron for 11 years, including six years in a concurrent role as K-12\ncoordinator of curriculum and staff development. He also served as assistant\nmiddle school principal in Phoenix, program supervisor of a regional summer\nschool at Onondaga Community College, a GED instructor and coordinator at\nCayuga-Onondaga BOCES, a social studies teacher at Chittenango High School and\na basketball and softball coach in Jamesville-Dewitt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bissetta was a member of the inaugural cohort of the Future\nSuperintendents Academy and served as chairman of the Cayuga-Onondaga Secondary\nPrincipals Association. He received the Cayuga-Onondaga School Boards Association\u2019s\nAdministrator of the Year award for the 2008-09 school year and the 2008\nDistinguished Education Award from the APEX Leadership Organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bissetta holds a bachelor\u2019s degree in history with a minor\nin physical education, a master\u2019s degree in social studies education from\nSyracuse University and a certificate of advanced study in educational administration\nfrom SUNY Cortland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cI am absolutely\nthrilled to be joining the Canastota Central School district as the new Superintendent,\u201d\nBissetta said. \u201cI always knew Canastota was an awesome community, having grown\nup just a few miles down the road, and my experience in the interview process\nhas only reinforced my opinion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was extremely impressed with the individuals I had an\nopportunity to meet because they are so clearly invested in the school and in\nthe larger community. Becoming the Canastota superintendent is an honor I do\nnot take lightly, and I can\u2019t wait to get to work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The board of education began its search for a new superintendent\nof schools in August and engaged community stakeholder groups to determine\nexpectations, needs and goals for the district, the search process and the new superintendent.\nThe board received 10 applications and interviewed four candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe board is excited to welcome Shawn Bissetta as our new superintendent,\nand we believe he will be an asset to the Canastota Central School District and\nthe entire community,\u201d Board President Deborah New said. \u201cWe spent much time\nand effort in our search for our new superintendent, and we want to thank all\nthose who helped with or took part in this process. We have been blessed\nwith the progress we\u2019ve made under the interim leadership of Dr. Kathleen Davis\nsince November, and we are confident that Mr. Bissetta will continue to move\nour district forward along this path.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
