Salka is gravely concerned about the impact\nthis system would have on the state\u2019s economy. The New York Health Act has\nopponents on both sides of the aisle and also includes several of the state\u2019s\nleading union groups such as NYS Public Employee Conference and Civil Service\nEmployees Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am deeply against the implementation of a single-payer\nsystem that could raise our income taxes significantly. It\u2019s unbearable,\u201d Salka\nsaid. \u201cI\u2019ve worked in the health care field for many years and now coupling\nthat with my perspective as a legislator, single-payer would demolish the\nalready -beleaguered and suffering economy of New York. It\u2019s simply untenable\nfrom an economic standpoint, not to mention the overwhelming degree of strain\nthis would put on our nurses and doctors who are struggling. I just can\u2019t see\nwhy anyone would think that shifting to single-payer would fix our health care\nproblems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe state Legislature should create 529-style healthcare\nsavings accounts and leave the decision making to middle-class families. These\naccounts be supplemented by new and current wasteful state funding to ensure\nthat everyone gets a seat at the table when it comes to their healthcare.
