The next walk will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday,\nJune 8, 2019, on the Creek Walk \u201cMonday Mile\u201d off Genesee Street in Chittenango\nwith Dr. Andrea Berg, a geriatrician with SUNY Upstate Medical University. All\nare welcome to join the walk. The event is free and pre-registration is not\nrequired. Fitness prizes will be available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this walk, we are partnering with the state Department\nof Health Arthritis Program. Walking has numerous health benefits, including\nhelping those with arthritis and related mobility issues relieve pain and\nimprove their health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a joint-friendly exercise, walking can be turned into a\nroutine, helping to improve stamina while reducing fatigue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Berg will share the importance of physical activity for\njoint pain, arthritis and other chronic conditions and then lead the group on\nthe one-mile walk. We encourage everyone to walk at their own pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walk with a Doc is a national non-profit organization whose\nmission is to encourage healthy physical activity in people of all ages and\nreverse the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle in order to improve the\nhealth and well-being of the country. The Madison County Rural Health Council\nis dedicated to promoting the WWAD program and its mission in Madison County. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why walk? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no question that increasing exercise, even\nmoderately, reduces the risks of many diseases, including coronary heart\ndisease, breast and colon cancer and Type 2 diabetes. Research has even shown\nthat you could gain two hours of life for each hour that you exercise\nregularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the American Heart Association, walking as\nlittle as 30 minutes a day can provide the following benefits: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Improve blood pressure and\n     blood sugar levels<\/li><li>Help maintain a healthy\n     body weight and lower the risk of obesity<\/li><li>Enhance mental well-being<\/li><li>Reduce the risk of\n     osteoporosis<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Madison County Rural Health Council is encouraging residents to take a step toward better health with Walk with a Doc, a health program that brings doctors and patients together to walk once a month in locations throughout the county.
