Cardiovascular risk factors and previous stroke occurrences were\nnoted from separate medical interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers found:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>overall\n     1,224 of the participants, suffered strokes;<\/li><li>29% or\n     42,542, reported working long hours;<\/li><li>10% or\n     14,481, reported working long hours for 10 years or more; and<\/li><li>participants\n     working long hours had a 29% greater risk of stroke, and those working\n     long hours for 10 years or more had a 45% greater risk of stroke.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long work hours were defined as working more than 10 hours\nfor at least 50 days per year. Part-time workers and those who suffered strokes\nbefore working long hours were excluded from the study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe association between 10 years of long work hours and\nstroke seemed stronger for people under the age of 50,\u201d said study author\nAlexis Descatha, M.D., Ph.D., a researcher at Paris Hospital, Versailles and\nAngers University and at the French National Institute of Health and Medical\nResearch (Inserm). \u201cThis was unexpected. Further research is needed to explore\nthis finding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI would also emphasize that many healthcare providers work\nmuch more than the definition of long working hours and may also be at higher\nrisk of stroke,\u201d Descatha said. \u201cAs a clinician, I will advise my patients to\nwork more efficiently and plan to follow my own advice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previous studies noted a smaller effect of long work hours\namong business owners, CEOs, farmers, professionals and managers. Researchers\nnoted that it might be because those groups generally have greater decision\nlatitude than other workers.
