Congressman seeks to hold Russia accountable, secure elections, and deter future foreign interference<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congressman Anthony Brindisi (NY-22) released a proposal\npresenting a bipartisan path forward to securing the United States election\ninfrastructure. Brindisi, joined by the Blue Dog Coalition, presented a\nproposal in response to the Mueller report and the detailing of Russia\u2019s attack\non America\u2019s elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSecuring our elections is something Democrats and\nRepublicans agree on,\u201d Brindisi said. \u201cIt is commonsense: Russia, or\nany other foreign country, should not be influencing our elections. With only\n227 days until the next election, Congress needs to act now on these solutions\nthat both parties support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal includes a series of election security measures\nincluding requiring all states to use paper ballots or that produce a\nvoter-verifiable paper audit trail, which has earned public support from President Trump<\/a> and Election Systems & Software<\/a>, a major voting machine\nvendor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to election security, the proposal urges\nCongress to pass the strongest sanctions possible against Russia in retaliation\nto its attempt to meddle in the 2016 and 2018 elections and pursue aggressive\npolicies to deter future interference attempts by Russia and other adversaries,\nincluding China, Iran and North Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal is based primarily on a set of 11 bills that\nhave earned bipartisan support in the House and the Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Blue Dog Coalition\u2019s proposal recommends the following\nbipartisan response to the Mueller report:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Equip and inform states and localities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Increase transparency on political ads sold online and\nreform the Federal Election Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Regularly assess the threat, enhance coordination, and\nalert federal, state, and local officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Prohibit foreign entities from participating in the U.S.\nelectoral process and update federal criminal and immigration laws regarding\nelection interference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Hold Russia accountable now and deter Russia and other\nadversaries from future election interference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
