Congressman blasts\nWashington for spending problem, calls for bipartisan, responsible solution<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the House of Representatives vote to raise the\ndebt ceiling, add nearly $1.7 trillion to the national debt and increase\nspending to near-record levels, Congressman Anthony Brindisi (NY-22) issued the\nfollowing statement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSwiping America\u2019s\ncredit card, mortgaging our kids\u2019 and grandkids\u2019 futures and enabling out-of-control\nspending seems to be one thing that unites Washington politicians. Enough is\nenough. I voted \u2018no\u2019 on this plan because it is not a real solution. Both parties\nare responsible for getting us into this fiscal mess, and we cannot continue to\nkick the can down the road \u2013 waiting until the next deadline to scramble\ntogether another \u2018Band-Aid\u2019 solution. Upstate New Yorkers are sick and tired of\nWashington wasting their hard-earned tax dollars. We are on a dangerous,\nunsustainable path, and Congress needs to do the hard work to rein in spending\nand responsibly tackle our debt.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a\nnon-partisan, independent organization, declared this budget deal \u201cmay be the\nworst in history.\u201d According to the CRFB, the budget deal could cost as much as\nthe un-paid-for tax cuts from 2017. The first bill Brindisi co-sponsored as a\nmember of Congress was the No Budget No Pay Act (H.R. 129) to stop members of\nCongress from being paid if they don\u2019t pass a budget and appropriations bills\non time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The House voted to raise the debt ceiling, add nearly $1.7\ntrillion to the national debt, and increase spending to near record levels by a\nvote of 284-189.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
