Though Capital One\u2019s breach was\ninternal, the fact still remains that safeguards were missing that allowed for\nthe illegal access of consumers\u2019 names, Social Security numbers, dates of\nbirth, addresses and other highly sensitive, personal information.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIt is becoming far\ntoo commonplace that financial institutions are susceptible to hacks, begging\nthe questions: Why do these breaches continue to take place? And are companies\ndoing enough to prevent future data breaches?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cMy office will begin\nan immediate investigation into Capital One\u2019s breach and will work to ensure\nthat New Yorkers who were victims of this breach are provided relief. We cannot\nallow hacks of this nature to become everyday occurrences.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, James led a nationwide announcement providing\nrestitution to the more than 147 million consumers affected by the breach of\nEquifax Inc. in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, James last week applauded the signing of the\nStop Hacks and Improve Electronic Data Security Act \u2014 a legislative priority of\nthe Office of the Attorney General during the 2019 session \u2014 into law.
