Brindisi fights to end robocalls and holds scammers accountable<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bipartisan group of House members issued the following\nstatements after their bipartisan bill\u2014the Locking Up Robocallers Act of 2019<\/a>\u2014passed out of the\nHouse as part of H.R. 3375, the Stopping Bad Robocalls Act. The\nLocking Up Robocallers Act of 2019 was introduced by Congressman Donald McEachin<\/a> (D-VA)\nandCongressman Pete Olson<\/a> (R-TX),\nwith original co-sponsors Congressman Anthony Brindisi<\/a> (D-NY),Congressman Andy Kim<\/a> (D-NJ), Congresswoman Susan\nBrooks<\/a> (R-IN),) and Congressman David Kustoff<\/a> (R-TN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bill directs the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)\nto provide evidence of unlawful robocall violations to the Department of\nJustice for prosecution. It would also require the FCC to publish and submit to\nCongress a report outlining the number and types of robocaller violations. This\nwould strengthen enforcement of current law aimed at ending the scourge of predatory\nrobocalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese calls aren\u2019t just annoying, they are dangerous and\ncan scam hard-working Americans out of time and money,\u201d said Brindisi. \u201cThis\nbill, supported by Democrats and Republicans, will crack down on these scams\nand hold the scammers accountable. The Locking Up Robocallers Act bolsters\nthis bill and gives law enforcement the tools they need to end these calls. I\nam proud to see it pass the House.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday\u2019s vote is a positive development for ending the\nrobocall epidemic,\u201d said McEachin. \u201cVirginians and all Americans are sick\nand tired of unsolicited robocalls, which can be a nuisance or even predatory.\nThe Stopping Bad Robocalls Act will help reduce the number of spam\nrobocalls received and protect consumers. I thank my colleagues for voting it\nout of the House and I look forward to working with our colleagues in the\nSenate to help this bill become law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are all united in opposition to robocalls,”\nsaid Olson. \u201cThis bill will provide critical information to the\nJustice Department, so they can fully prosecute criminals who engage in\ndeceptive and illegal robocall practices. I’m proud to work on this bipartisan\nissue to help Texans hang up on harassing robocalls. I thank my colleagues for\nhelping pass this important bill and urge the Senate to act very soon as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This bill puts us one step closer to ending robocalls once\nand for all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the FCC<\/a>, they receive over 200,000 complaints\na year from residents receiving predatory robocalls. Another\nFCC report <\/a>shows that an estimated 26.3 billion robocalls were made to\nmobile phones and more than 47 billion were made in total to phones in the U.S.\nin 2018.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
