And that should remind motorists to be diligent when area\nstudents return to school this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its annual&nbsp;School\u2019s Open \u2013 Drive&nbsp;Carefully&nbsp;message,\nAAA Northeast encourages drivers to be during mornings and afternoons when\nchildren get on and off school buses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the greatest risk to children isn\u2019t riding school buses; it\u2019s approaching or leaving them. Between 2008 and 2017, NHTSA reports 264 school-age children were killed in school transportation-related crashes, primarily when they waited at bus stops or crossed streets before boarding or getting off school buses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AAA Northeast reminds motorists that Kids get caught up in\nthe excitement of \u2018back-to-school\u2019 and sometimes they forget to look for cars,\neven though drivers are required to yield and stop for school buses with\nactivated lights. Others have trouble judging traffic speed and distance, so\ndrivers need to be aware \u2013 especially in school zones, near playgrounds or at\nbus stops &#8212; that kids may dart into streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AAA Northeast reminds drivers a school bus\u2019s&nbsp;flashing\nyellow lights&nbsp;mean \u2018Slow Down\u2019 because the bus is preparing to stop;\nwhile&nbsp;red flashing lights&nbsp;mean&nbsp;\u2018Stop\u2019&nbsp;and wait at least 20\nfeet behind the bus as children get on or off the vehicle. State law requires\ndrivers to remain stopped until the bus lights stop flashing, the driver\nwithdraws the extended stop-arm, and the bus begins to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AAA Northeast offers these driver tips to keep children\nsafe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Slow down.<\/strong>\u00a0Speed limits in school zones are reduced for a reason. A pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling at 25 mph is nearly two-thirds      less likely to be killed compared to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle      traveling just 10 mph faster.<\/li><li><strong>Come to a complete stop.<\/strong>\u00a0Research shows more than one-third of drivers roll through stop signs in school zones or neighborhoods.<\/li><li><strong>Look for clues,<\/strong>\u00a0such as AAA School Safety Patrollers, crossing guards,      and school zone signs that indicate children are in the area.<\/li><li><strong>Keep your eyes moving.<\/strong>\u00a0Scan between parked cars; look for shadows on the ground. Since children can be quick crossing roadways unexpectedly or emerging suddenly between parked cars, understand that taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles your chances of colliding with another car or pedestrian.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, parents and guardians should teach\nschool-aged children to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Cross at corners<\/strong>, not in mid-block. Use crosswalks if they\u2019re available.<\/li><li><strong>Use your \u2018eagle\u2019 eyes<\/strong>: look left, right, then left again before crossing streets.<\/li><li><strong>Rights on red<\/strong>\u00a0can be dangerous; watch for turning vehicles when      crossing at corners.<\/li><li><strong>Eliminate electronics\u00a0<\/strong>such as headphones and cellphones when crossing streets.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Heed the \u2018Golden Rules\u2019 of school bus safety The wheels on the bus go \u2018round and \u2018round . . .\u201d goes the children\u2019s song.
