As 50 million children across the country begin heading back\nto school, AAA Northeast urges motorists to slow down and stay alert in\nneighborhoods and school zones, and to be especially vigilant for pedestrians\nduring before- and after-school hours. The afternoon hours are particularly\ndangerous for walking children \u2013 over the last decade, nearly one-third of\nchild pedestrian fatalities occurred during after school hours between 3 and 7\np.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AAA\u2019s School\u2019s Open \u2013 Drive Carefully<\/em> awareness\ncampaign was designed in 1946 to curb a trend of unsafe driving behavior in\nschool zones and neighborhoods that can result in children\u2019s injury and death.\nAAA Northeast and Oneida County Sherriff Rob Maciol reminds motorists to slow\ndown and stay alert as kids head back to school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both AAA and Sherriff Maciol offer helpful tips to keep kids\nsafe this school year:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Slow\n down<\/strong>.  Speed limits in school zones are reduced for a reason. A\n pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling 25 mph is nearly two-thirds less\n likely to be killed compared to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling\n just 10 mph faster. A difference between 25 mph and 35 mph can save a\n life.<\/li>
  2. Eliminate\n distractions<\/strong>. Children often cross the road unexpectedly and may\n emerge suddenly between two parked cars. Research shows that taking your\n eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles your chances of crashing.<\/li>
  3. Reverse\n responsibly<\/strong>.  Every vehicle has blind spots. Check for children\n on the sidewalk, driveway and around your vehicle before slowly backing\n up. Teach your children to never play in, under or around vehicles\u2014even\n those that are parked.<\/li>
  4. Talk\n to your teen<\/strong>. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in\n the United States, and more than one-quarter of fatal crashes involving\n teen drivers occur during the after-school hours of 3 to 7 p.m. Get\n evidence-based guidance and tips at TeenDriving.AAA.com<\/a>.<\/li>
  5. Come\n to a complete stop<\/strong>. Research shows that more than one-third of drivers\n roll through stop signs in school zones or neighborhoods. Always come to a\n complete stop, checking carefully for children on sidewalks and in\n crosswalks before proceeding.<\/li>
  6. Watch\n for bicycles<\/strong>. Children on bikes are often inexperienced, unsteady and\n unpredictable. Slow down and allow at least three feet of passing distance\n between your vehicle and the bicycle.  If your child rides a bicycle\n to school, require that they wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet on\n every ride.
