Nationally, more than 450 possible cases of vaping-associated\nillness have been reported since June 2019. To date, 74 cases of\nvaping-associated illness have been identified in New York state, including\nseven in Central New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearly all patients who became ill were hospitalized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUntil the investigations as to the cause of reported\nvape-associated illnesses in our state and across the nation is concluded, we\nurge all Madison County residents to stop use of all vape products,\u201d said Madison\nCounty Public Health Director Eric Faisst. \u201cThis includes e-cigarettes and\ne-liquid products.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York state laboratory testing found very high levels of\nvitamin E acetate in nearly all samples examined as part of these illness\ninvestigations. At least one vitamin E acetate-containing vape product has been\nlinked to each ill patient who provided a product for testing. Vitamin E\nacetate may be associated with serious health effects when inhaled due to\noil-like properties. This supplement is not an approved additive to vape\nproducts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlthough no vape associated illnesses have been reported in\nMadison County to date, the illnesses under investigation are very concerning,\u201d\nFaisst said. \u201cWe want this message to reach residents to protect their health\nand the health of their family, by stopping use of vaping products. We want\nresidents to know that vaping is not worry-free.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the National Academy of Science, Engineering\nand Medicine has found conclusive evidence that in addition to nicotine, most\ne-cigarette products contain and emit numerous toxic substances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Healthcare providers should report possible cases of\nvaping-associated illness to the Upstate Poison Control Center at 800.222.1222.\nThe Center can also help determine the need for product testing and provide\ninstructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of Sept. 12, 2019, the state Department of Health issued\nemergency regulations under Public Health Law that now require the posting of\nwarning signs on the dangers of vaping by all smoke and vaping shops or\nentities in the state that sell vaping products.
