The Sixth Judicial District encompasses all of\nBroome, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Madison, Otsego, Schuyler, Tioga\nand Tompkins counties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three seats for state Supreme Court in the Sixth Judicial\nDistrict will be on the ballot this year, due to the recent retirement of Judge\nJudith O\u2019Shea of Chemung County and the impending retirements of Judges Ferris\nLebous of Broome County and Phillip Rumsey of Cortland County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voters will be able to vote for three candidates in the\nelection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The retired state Supreme Court justices who made the\nendorsements are Hon. Robert Coutant (Broome County), Hon. Bruce Crew (Chemung\nCounty), Hon. Patrick Monseratte (Broome County), Hon. Carl Mugglin (Delaware\nCounty), O\u2019Shea (Chemung County) and Hon. Robert Rose (served in Broome County).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The retired justices issued a joint statement: <em>\u201cServing as a State Supreme Court Justice is\na weighty responsibility and should be entrusted only to individuals with\nappropriately high standards of professional experience and personal character.\nBaker, Blaise and Masler exemplify the characteristics that are needed to serve\nin these critical positions within our justice system. We enthusiastically join\ntogether to endorse them in this year\u2019s election.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Baker, 50, serves as a Chemung County Court judge and acting\nstate Supreme Court justice. Since taking office in 2016, Baker has presided\nover thousands of cases covering all aspects of the law. Prior to being elected\nto county court, he served as the confidential attorney, counselor and principal\nlaw clerk for O\u2019Shea, whom he is running to succeed. He was born and raised in\nElmira and lives with his wife Karen and their two sons on the same street\nwhere he grew up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blais, 47, is currently a partner at Coughlin &amp; Gerhart\nin Binghamton and has been an attorney for more than two decades, serving as\ngeneral or litigation counsel to municipalities, fire districts, fire companies\nand school districts. He has performed trial and appellate work in municipal\nand commercial cases, intellectual property, real property and personal injury\nlitigation in state and federal courts and administrative agencies. Also a\nformer election commissioner with the Broome County Board of Elections, Blaise\nand his wife, Dalya, are parents of four children, and he is active with United\nWay and Sertoma Club in Binghamton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Masler, 59, has served for 11 years as the attorney and\nprincipal law clerk to Supreme Court Rumsey, whom he is running to succeed. He\nwas born and raised in Broome County and attended Cornell University, where he\nstudied agriculture and earned a degree in business management. After college, Masler\nand his wife Bernice operated a family dairy farm for seven years before he\nreturned to Cornell Law School. Masler previously practiced law as a partner at\nHarris Beach, PLLC, in Ithaca. The Maslers have lived in Cortland County for 35\nyears; they have four children and one grandchild.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 5. New York state will\nalso permit early voting this year between Oct. 26 and Nov. 3 at designated\npolling sites.
