Federal proposal to consolidate military\u2019s dairy suppliers\nwould have forced local farms to ship their products to a central location\nbefore coming back to New York military sites, rather than selling directly to\nbases  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Ranking Member of the\nSenate Armed Services Personnel Subcommittee, today announced that her\nprovision to guarantee local dairy, fruit and vegetable farmers can sell their\nproducts directly to military installations has been included in the\nconferenced NDAA. This comes following a federal proposal by the Defense\nCommissary Agency to consolidate suppliers that would have forced New York\u2019s\nfarmers to ship their products away from New York before being distributed to\nNew York military posts. Gillibrand\u2019s provision requires the Department of\nDefense to ensure that dairy products, fruits, and vegetables for commissary\nstores are locally sourced whenever possible to ensure the availability of the\nfreshest possible products. The final, conferenced NDAA is expected to be put\nto a vote by Congress in coming days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNew York farmers grow and produce the best dairy, fruit,\nand vegetables, and it makes sense that our states\u2019 military bases turn to them\nto supply their commissaries. It was unreasonable that the Department of\nDefense would consider putting in place a new, inefficient model that would\nprevent our farmers from selling directly to bases and instead ship products\naway from our state before they could be shipped back to the men and women on\nNew York\u2019s bases, and that would have hurt our farmers,\u201d said Senator\nGillibrand. \u201cThe men and women that serve our country and work on our military\nbases deserve to have the freshest supplies. I\u2019m proud to have secured a\nprovision in this year\u2019s NDAA that prevents this model from being put into\nplace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gillibrand has long been an advocate for New York farmers.\nShe passed a provision in last year\u2019s Farm bill that would refund nearly $60\nmillion in insurance premiums to farmers who paid millions of dollars into an\ninsurance program, the Dairy Margin Protection Program, which did not help them\nwhen milk prices dropped. She has also fought to ensure any trade negotiation\nbetween Canada and Mexico protects New York dairy farmers against unfair\nCanadian policies that limit American dairy producer\u2019s access to the Canadian\nmarket. She has also called on the Secretary of Agriculture to authorize $300\nmillion in emergency relief funding for dairy farmers in New York and across\nthe country. Additionally, Gillibrand has called for an investigation into the\nfresh fruit and vegetable market to make sure that New York farmers are\nreceiving fair prices for their products.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
