Students have also issued update newsletters, or mailers, to each participating university.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>SUNY Canton prepares to host American Institute of Steel Construction\nSteel Bridge Competition April 23 and 24<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students from SUNY Canton&#8217;s American Institute of Steel\nConstruction Steel Bridge Team are making preparations to host the 2020 Upstate\nNew York Regional Competition; among them is Cazenovia resident Laura Clements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Our dedicated students from the Canino School of\nEngineering Technology are committed to making this competition a\nsuccess,&#8221; said Steel Bridge Team Advisor Paul D. Hitchman, who also works\nas an instructional support associate for the Civil and Environmental\nEngineering program. &#8220;In addition to designing a competition-ready bridge,\nthe students are handling the majority of the logistics and planning.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two-day event will begin April 23 with the main\ncompetition running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 24 in the Roos House\nConvocation, Athletic and Recreation Center. During the event, each team will\nrapidly assemble their steel bridge, which has to meet strict guidelines\ndictated by the AISC. Each bridge will then be test loaded with steel weights\nto determine its strength and rigidity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The end goal is to display the most economical and\naesthetically pleasing entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The competition is free and open to spectators, with a\nspecial invitation extended to alumni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The team is exceptionally eager to compete on our home\nturf,&#8221; said Kimberly Collins, a member of the team and the regional\nstudent steel bridge competition event planner. &#8220;We&#8217;ve designed a special\nevent to showcase our campus and its unique academic programs.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SUNY Canton&#8217;s team historically does exceptionally well in\nthe upstate regional meet with 15 first-place finishes in its 25-year run.\nFollowing a series of regional competitions, AISC will hold a national\ncompetition of the best entries. The college landed a first-place finish in\nboth the regional and national competition in 2009. In 2018, the college picked\nup a second-place win at regionals and a ninth-place finish at nationals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to Clements, student members of SUNY Canton&#8217;s\nTeam include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Israel Akande, an engineering science 2+2 major from Albany<\/li><li>Mark Antonik, a civil and environmental engineering technology major from Auburn<\/li><li>Jaden Caldwell, a mechanical engineering technology major from Canton<\/li><li>Clements, a mechatronics technology major<\/li><li>Kimberly Collins, a mechanical engineering technology major from Saranac Lake; Collins serves as the team&#8217;s vice president<\/li><li>John Drews, a civil and environmental engineering technology major from Sound Beach; Drews serves as the team&#8217;s senator<\/li><li>Brett Hall, a civil and environmental engineering technology major from Plattsburgh<\/li><li>Dale Harris, a civil and environmental engineering technology major from Dundee; Harris serves as the team&#8217;s vice president<\/li><li>Forest Hathaway, a civil and environmental engineering technology major from Fine; Hathaway serves as the team&#8217;s treasurer<\/li><li>Grant Heath, a civil and environmental engineering technology major from Holsworthy<\/li><li>Kyle Lorey, a mechanical engineering technology major from Corning; Lorey serves as the team&#8217;s president<\/li><li>Calvin McPheeters, a mechanical engineering technology major from Springfield<\/li><li>Hannah Nicholas, a civil and environmental engineering technology major from Newport News<\/li><li>Devin Nusbaum, a civil and environmental engineering technology major from Albany<\/li><li>Sara O&#8217;Duffy, a mechanical engineering technology major from Lakeville;
