My community survey can be completed at\nwww.nyassembly.gov\/Stirpe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A pivotal issue for Central New York is addressing the aging\nI-81, the most significant infrastructure project our region has faced in\ndecades. In April, the state Department of Transportation (DOT) identified the\ncommunity grid alternative as its preferred solution for the corridor.[1] I\nsupport the community grid approach because it\u2019s the most affordable and least\ndisruptive option and offers potential benefits for all of our communities.\nHowever, knowing your thoughts on how this critical project should proceed\nallows me to see whether we\u2019re on the right path forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A priority that I\u2019m sure everyone shares is ensuring our\nschools are safe for students and staff. Many school districts have hired\npolice officers or private security to serve as school resource officers\n(SROs), but several hurdles exist before retired police officers can fill these\npositions. I\u2019ve authored legislation to remove obstacles for school districts\nto hire these officers (A.6456-A), which is often a cost-savings alternative compared\nto active police and private firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other issues impacting Central New York include addressing\nthe state\u2019s fiscal deficit due to federal cuts in Medicaid support, providing\nreliable transportation for our regional workforce, reducing the tax burden on\nlocal residents and potentially legalizing marijuana for recreational adult\nuse. I hope you\u2019ll take the time to share your thoughts on these topics and\nmore through my survey so I can work to get the best results for our families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2020 legislative session holds the potential for even\nmore positive changes for our communities, and I look forward to building on\nthis year\u2019s accomplishments. Some of 2019\u2019s critical victories include enacting\nthe Child Victims Act to allow more victims of childhood sexual abuse to seek\njustice (Ch. 11 of 2019), decoupling teacher evaluations from students\u2019 state\ntest scores (Ch. 27 of 2019), expanding the Operation Recognition program so\nmore veterans have an opportunity to receive their high school diplomas (Ch.\n477 of 2019) and forging a greener future through the New York State Climate\nLeadership and Community Protection Act (Ch. 106 of 2019).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also supported several new laws to simplify the voting\nprocess, including allowing early voting during a nine-day period before an\nelection (Ch. 6 of 2019), combining the state and federal primary election\ndates (Ch. 5 of 2019) and requiring boards of elections to automatically\ntransfer voter registration information for residents who move to another county\nin the state (Ch. 3 of 2019).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ll continue working with you and our local leaders to\ncraft solutions to make Central New York an even better place to call home.
