This funding has helped\narea agencies on aging clear waiting lists of clients\u2014some in their 90s\u2014in need\nof vital home-based services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am honored to be recognized by AARP as a \u2018Capitol\nCaregiver,\u2019\u201d May said. \u201cSeniors comprise the fastest-growing segment of our\nstate\u2019s population, and we have to ensure we have the services and resources to\nsupport them in their daily living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis funding helps fill a tremendously important need among\nthose who, with some key support, have the capacity and desire to remain in\ntheir homes rather than having to move into a publicly funded, and much\ncostlier, nursing home. It makes good economic sense\u2014and it aligns with the\nwishes of a vast majority of seniors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>May also has sponsored a bill creating a tax credit for\nunpaid family caregivers and co-sponsors a package of bills designed to rein in\nprescription drug costs, all of which are endorsed by AARP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAARP is grateful to Senator May for supporting New York\u2019s\n2.5 million family caregivers, including by successfully fighting for an\nhistoric increase in this year\u2019s state budget for home and community-based\nservices for older New Yorkers\u2014which provide respite and relief for\ncaregivers,\u201d said AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel. \u201cFamily caregivers\nspend nearly $7,000 a year on average out of their own pockets to help their\nloved ones age at home with dignity &#8211; about 20 percent of their income. We are\nhonoring Senator May because she recognizes that supporting family caregivers\nis the right and humane thing\u2014and protects a New York industry worth $31\nbillion, the value of the unpaid care family caregivers provide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AARP created its annual \u201cCapitol Caregivers\u201d designation six\nyears ago as a way to call attention to and rally support for the approximately\n41 million U.S. citizens who provide care for an aging loved one or child with\na disability.
