Corey Cush case the unit colors at Fort Hood, Texas, March 1, 2020, as the unit deploys overseas.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>42nd Infantry Division troops left New York in January for training before deployment<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Six hundred and fifty New York Army National Guard Soldiers\nfrom the 42nd Infantry Division headquarters who have been training at Fort\nHood, Texas, have deployed to the United States Central Command area of\nresponsibility in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The soldiers, who come from across the state but are\nheadquartered in Troy, left New York Jan. 11 following farewell events in the\nAlbany area, Rochester and New York City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The division, commanded by Major General Steven Ferrari will\nassume command over Task Force Spartan, the Army component of U.S. forces in\nthe area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Task Force Spartan is a multi-component organization, made\nup of active Army and National Guard units, rounded out by U.S. Army Reserve\nsupport units. The task force maintains U.S. military posture in Southwest Asia\nsufficient to strengthen defense relationships and build partner capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The soldiers are expected to be deployed for about 10\nmonths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Division soldiers initially trained at Fort Indiantown Gap,\nPa., for two weeks before moving to Fort Hood to train in February for\nadditional pre-deployment training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 42nd Infantry Division was created during World War I\nwhen National Guard elements from 26 states were combined into one division\nthat could deploy to France quickly. The officer who came up with the idea,\nCol. Douglas MacArthur, said the division would stretch across the United\nStates &#8220;like a rainbow.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then the division has been known as The Rainbow Division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In World War II, the division was recreated and fought in\nFrance and Germany. Division soldiers took the cities of Wurzburg and Munich\nand liberated the inmates at the infamous Dachau Concentration Camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1947, the 42nd Infantry Division became part of the New\nYork Army National Guard. Division soldiers responded to state emergencies and\nserved as part of the United States strategic reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2004, the division headquarters and support elements were\nmobilized for deployment to Iraq.
