ABOVE RIGHT: A biography of Ann Carroll Fitzhugh Smith, \u201cGod, Gerrit and Guidance,\u201d was introduced Saturday, March 7, 2020.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During the first week of March, Women\u2019s History Month, the\nGerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark and the National Abolition Hall\nof Fame and Museum in Peterboro will launch a commemoration of the Women\u2019s\nSuffrage Centennial at 1 pm Saturday, March 7 at the Smithfield Community\nCenter, 5255 Pleasant Valley Road, Peterboro NY. The Nineteenth Amendment (The\nright of citizens of the United State to vote shall not be denied or abridged\nby the United States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have\npower to enforce this article by appropriate legislation) was passed by the\nHouse of Representatives on May 21, 1919 after its initial introduction in\n1878. The Senate passed the Amendment on June 4, 1919. The 36th state needed\nfor ratification did so on August 18, 2020, and the amendment was officially\nratified on August 26, 2020. In 1973 Congress designated August 26 as Women\u2019s\nEquality Day.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Norman K. Dann PhD will open the afternoon with a program on Smithfield Women Reformers, including the introduction of a new publication God, Gerrit and Guidance: The Life of Ann Carroll Fitzhugh Smith. Dann will be followed by Matthew Urtz, Madison County historian, who will present a PowerPoint on Women\u2019s Suffrage in Madison County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laura Costello and Laura Martino, from the Madison County\nBoard of Elections, will explain the recent New York State legislation on voter\npre-registration for sixteen and seventeen year olds, describe the process of\nregistering, encourage pre-registration, and provide registration forms for\nonsite registration. David Holmes, voter statistics researcher, will provide\nstatistics and trends of women voters in Madison County enumerating the number\nof teens eligible to register to vote in each town in the county.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In respect to the 100 years of female voting rights in the United States, a campaign to recruit at least 100 female teen voters in Madison County commenced at the March 7 event. Young women who are registered to vote and attend a women\u2019s history program in Madison County by June 20th will be awarded a suffrage sash of purple, gold, and white to wear in a suffrage unit in a Fourth of July parade dressed as a 1920 suffragist or as a 2020 teen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teens present at the March 7th meeting in Peterboro will be able to register to vote (if not already registered) and count attendance at a women\u2019s history program. Cultural and heritage sites in Madison County will be announcing events which will welcome teen attendance. Further information on women\u2019s history programs will be available as of March 9th at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.PeterboroNY.org\">PeterboroNY.org<\/a>, info@gerritsmith.org, and at 315.280.8828.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jody Luce, the Tailor of Peterboro, demonstrated How to Dress Like a Suffragist inexpensively at the close of the March 7 programs, after which Norm Dann provided a guided Women\u2019s Rights Walk at the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continuing 2020 events in Peterboro that honor the Suffrage\nCentennial:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum, at 5255 Pleasant Valley Road, Peterboro, will open May 23rd with Saturday and Sunday hours from 1-5 pm until Aug. 30 with inducted women abolitionists featured, demonstrating that the abolition movement launched the women\u2019s rights movement. <\/li><li>Saturday, June 13th from 1 \u2013 7 pm, the Peterboro Freedom Festival on the grounds of the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark, will provide food, museums, exhibits and musicians celebrating freedoms \u2013 one of which will be women\u2019s rights.<\/li><li>At the 11th annual Peterboro Emancipation Day Saturday, August 1, at 1:30 pm, Susan Goodier, Ph.D., will present on her research and upcoming publication Black Suffragists. <\/li><li>For Women\u2019s Equality Day, Wednesday, Aug. 26, Peterboro heritage sites invite bell towers in Madison County to ring 19 times at 6:19 p.m. for the Nineteenth Amendment.<\/li><li>Jody Luce and the Bloomer Brigade turn the Smithfield Community Center into an attractive tea house in which to hold the Bloomer Tea at noon on Saturday, Sept. 26, honoring Elizabeth Smith Miller, designer of the bloomer costume that became a symbol of the 19th C. women\u2019s movement. Miller\u2019s cousin, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, will be the guest of honor as portrayed by Melinda Grube. Leigh Fought, Ph.D., will share her research and award winning book Women in the World of Frederick Douglass. Registration for the tea is required at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.PeterboroNY.org\">PeterboroNY.org<\/a>.<\/li><li>The National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum Antislavery Dinner at 5 pm Saturday, Oct. 24, will recognize the inducted women to the Abolition Hall of Fame who were also involved in women\u2019s rights movement.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The women\u2019s rights programs are, in part, sponsored by a\nHumanities New York Action Grant.
