{"id":117018,"date":"2021-03-15T11:47:14","date_gmt":"2021-03-15T15:47:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=117018"},"modified":"2021-03-15T11:47:14","modified_gmt":"2021-03-15T15:47:14","slug":"red-cross-urges-everyone-to-turn-and-test-for-daylight-saving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=117018","title":{"rendered":"Red Cross urges everyone to turn and test for daylight saving"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With daylight saving time beginning Sunday, March 14, we encourage people to test their smoke alarms with the turning forward of the clocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWorking smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half,\u201d said American Red Cross Eastern New York Region Regional CEO Kevin Coffey. \u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s critical to \u2018Turn and Test.\u2019 We hope everyone will follow these lifesaving steps to stay safe from home fires \u2013 the nation\u2019s most frequent disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms and sleeping areas. Test alarms monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year if your model requires it.<\/li><li>Replace smoke alarms that are 10 years or older. That\u2019s because the sensor becomes less sensitive over time. Check the date of your smoke alarms and follow the instructions.<\/li><li>Practice your two-minute escape <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcross.org\/content\/dam\/redcross\/atg\/PDF_s\/Preparedness___Disaster_Recovery\/Disaster_Preparedness\/Home_Fire\/Home_Fire_Escape_Plan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plan<\/a>. Make sure everyone in your household can get out in less than two minutes, the amount of time you may have to get out of a burning home before it\u2019s too late. Include at least two ways to get out from every room and select a meeting spot at a safe distance away from your home, such as your neighbor\u2019s home or landmark like a specific tree in your front yard, where everyone knows where to meet.<\/li><li>Teach children what a smoke alarm sounds like. To help prevent fire-related deaths and injuries, the Red Cross launched the Home Fire Campaign with community partners in 2014 to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, the Home Fire Campaign has reached more than 2.3 million people and is credited with saving at least 836 lives across the country.
