(Jan. 2, 2013) The national impaired driving enforcement campaign began Friday, Dec. 14 and continued through Tuesday, Jan. 1. More than 20,000 police agencies nationwide participated.<\/p>\n

During that time period, the New York State Police issued more than 33,000 tickets and arrested 538 people for DWI.\u00a0 During the campaign, more than 10,000 drivers were ticketed for speed, not wearing seat belts or properly restraining children in vehicles.<\/p>\n

During the period, the New York State Police held 29 sobriety checkpoints, 10 saturation details, 12 underage drinking and sales to minors details, and 41 additional dedicated local DWI patrols.\u00a0 Saturation details consist of multiple roving units that target a specific area of focus.\u00a0 It is a massive effort supported largely through grants from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, aimed at preventing tragedies during the Holiday Season.

In addition to the checkpoints and patrols, 12 underage drinking initiative details checked 14 bars and 120 retail establishments across the state.<\/p>\n
