{"id":41326,"date":"2013-01-26T09:00:50","date_gmt":"2013-01-26T14:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=41326"},"modified":"2013-01-26T09:01:03","modified_gmt":"2013-01-26T14:01:03","slug":"doctor-to-help-transform-nations-end-of-life-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=41326","title":{"rendered":"Doctor to Help Transform Nation\u2019s End-of-life care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Utica, NY \u2013 Jan. 2013 The Institute of Medicine has selected an Excellus BlueCross BlueShield physician to serve on a committee of national experts charged with helping to transform the nation\u2019s end-of-life care.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?attachment_id=41327\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-41327\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-41327\" alt=\"Dr Pat Bomba\" src=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Dr-Pat-Bomba.jpg\" width=\"226\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Dr-Pat-Bomba.jpg 226w, https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Dr-Pat-Bomba-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><\/a>Patricia Bomba, M.D., vice president and medical director, geriatrics, Excellus BCBS,\u00a0will serve on the\u00a0Institute of Medicine\u2019s\u00a0Committee on Transforming End-of-Life Care.<\/p>\n<p>Bomba is a\u00a0nationally recognized palliative care and end-of-life expert who designs and oversees the implementation of community projects throughout New York state. At Excellus BCBS, Bomba serves as a geriatric consultant on projects and programs affecting seniors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew York state is ahead of the curve when it comes to ensuring patients\u2019 wishes are honored at the end of life,\u201d Bomba said. \u201cI hope to parlay the successes of New York state into a new national standard that empowers patients, their families and physicians to make and share sound decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bomba was the driving force behind a 2008 New York state Medical Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment (MOLST) law which helped to ensure that a person\u2019s end-of-life wishes were followed, whether the person was at home, in a nursing home or in any other non-hospital setting.<\/p>\n<p>Bomba earned a bachelor\u2019s degree from Immaculata College in Pennsylvania and graduated from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of Rochester and is board certified in internal medicine, with added qualifications in geriatric medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Bomba serves as New York\u2019s representative on the National POLST (Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment) Paradigm Task Force and chairs New York\u2019s MOLST Statewide Implementation Team.<\/p>\n<p>The Institute of Medicine is an independent, nonprofit organization that\u00a0works outside of government to provide unbiased and authoritative advice to decision-makers and the public.
