Alison Flood and Megan Ark contributed to the win with a pair of goals apiece and Kate Sheridan added three assists.

“Offensively we have a lot of threats,” head coach Heather Young said when asked about the early lead. “We were able to rotate players in off the bench and we were just shooting. It was not the best shooting percentage, but to get seven-straight goals was great.”

On the defensive side, Emily Speck had one of her best games as a Raider with a team-high six ground balls and five caused turnovers as well as three draw controls. Jennie Berglin stopped eight shots, including two in the first few minutes to help Colgate spring to an 8-1 lead.

“Jennie’s performance was awesome today,” said Young. “It is always huge for a goalie to make those first two saves, especially to pump up our defense and then holding them to the one goal for most of the opening half. It gave our defense confidence to force low angle shots and she was there to make the save.”

The Catamounts (0-1) got three goals from Jessica Roach and a couple from Samantha Gallerani. Vanessa VanderZalm had a multi-point game with a goal and a helper. Charlotte Lyons did her best in net with 13 saves in the loss.

The teams traded the first two goals in the opening nine minutes of action. Berglin was able to make a couple of point-blank saves to keep the Catamounts off the board. Colgate then opened it up with a seven-goal run to open up an 8-1 advantage.

O’Sullivan, White and Flood combined for the seven goals with O’Sullivan and White added three each. Flood scored twice and both goals were assisted by Sheridan, who had all three of her assists during the scoring streak.

Vermont cut into the lead with three-straight goals to end the half with two free-position goals and the teams went into halftime with Colgate leading, 8-4. Marcie Marino got it started with 1:37 left in the opening half to make it 8-2 and then Emma Kelly and VanderZalm put two free-position shots past Berglin.

O’Sullivan pushed the Raider advantage back to five goals with her fourth of the day coming 2:31 into the second half. The Catamounts answered with a small three-goal run to get Colgate’s lead down to two goals at 9-7 with 23 minutes left in the game. Roach had two of the three goals and all were unassisted.

Colgate then put the game out of reach over 13-minute span with five goals to make it 13-7 in favor of the home team. Megan Ark scored her second of the day to start the final assault and made it 10-7. The highlight of the run was a nice goal from Taylor Fischer for her first tally of her Colgate career. The Catamounts tried to come back with Gallerani scoring with four minutes left and Sydney Mas tallying her first of the year to close out the scoring as the Raiders came away with a 13-9 win. The Raiders did a nice job on Mas, who was Vermont’s leading scorer last season with 53 goals.

The Raiders cleared the ball successfully in their first game as they were a perfect, 17-for-17 in the category. Colgate had a 31-22 advantage in shots and posted 28 ground balls, including 18 in the first half.

“The word of the week was hustle and we tried to instill that in them this preseason. It was one of the big things we worked on,” Young said. “I was very pleased with how they followed through because they did a great job today and all week.

Next up for the Maroon and White is a midweek trip to Marist for a 3 p.m. start.

Amanda O’Sullivan scored five goals to lead the Colgate women’s lacrosse team to a season-opening 13-9 win over Vermont Saturday.
