The host Catamounts pulled one back just before the period ended, but McCann struck again to start the fourth quarter and the Raiders took control.

“We started the game fairly strong, but give Vermont credit,” Colgate head coach Mike Murphy said. “They just scratched their way back into the game to tie it at halftime.

“Our guys did a good job of coming out in that third quarter. We controlled some faceoffs that we didn’t in the first half, which gave us a little bit of a spark.”

The Raiders improved to 2-0 for the young season, while Vermont is 0-1 after its 2013 opener.

Colgate never trailed in the game, but there were three ties – all in the first half. Twice during the first 30 minutes the Raiders grabbed two-goal leads, only to see the Catamounts rally both times.

Jimmy Ryan and Peter Baum scored unassisted goals to put the Raiders on the board. Then after Vermont tied it 2-2, Baum struck gold again off a nifty give-and-go from Aaron Darr and it was 3-2 Raiders at the quarter break.

Tied again 3-3, Connor Brown scored for Colgate on a great diving effort from the right side. Ryan Walsh bettered that one with a dazzling behind the back and over the shoulder goal that pushed the lead to 5-3 with 5:46 left in the half.

Again the Catamounts came back and it was 5-5 at intermission.

McCann’s the Man

But that’s when McCann found his range. The Warrenton, Va., native scored less than a minute into the third period, picking up a loose ball behind the net and swinging around to his right side before firing the shot past Vermont’s Dan DiStefano. McCann scored again from the behind the net at 10:15, and then tallied his third in a row with 8:37 showing off a pass from Walsh after Ryan had dinged the pipe.

“It was great,” Murphy said. “He did a good job of trying to create space for himself and our guys did a good job of finding Brendon.”

Vermont’s Graham Horvath scored the second of his three goals with 2.3 seconds left in the period to pull the Catamounts within 8-6, but McCann and the Raiders simply poured it on in a five-goal final frame.

McCann scored his fourth straight for Colgate 45 seconds into the period, and then Ryan found the net at 10:14 by racing to the left of goal and firing across his body for a 10-6 advantage.

Walsh and McCann scored six second apart nearing the midway point of the period. Matt Clarkson set up Walsh for his second of the day, and then Rob Grabher won the ensuing faceoff and raced into the offensive zone. He pitched it to Walsh, who quickly found McCann for Colgate’s fourth goal in a row and a 12-6 cushion with 8:42 remaining.

“Robbie Grabher really kind of controlled the play at the faceoff X, which allowed us to tilt the field our way in the second half,” Murphy said.

Baum’s 2-man advantage goal finished the scoring with 2:09 to play. It was his third goal of the day and 28th career hat trick to extend his active Division I lead in that category. The senior captain now has 135 career goals – just three shy of the Patriot League record held by Bucknell’s Justin Zackey (1991-94).

“Peter did a really good job of managing the offense and getting guys in the spots where they needed to be,” Murphy said. “We shot the ball a lot better than we did a week ago against Bryant.”

Defense Steps Up

Shots favored Colgate by 41-30, while Vermont claimed a 27-25 edge in ground balls. Vermont won 11 of the 21 faceoffs, and turnovers were even at 11. Colgate was 1-of-5 on extra-man opportunities – all in the fourth period – while Vermont finished 0-of-5.

Gordon Santry was solid in net for the winners, posting 11 saves. Walsh added three assists to his two goals to match McCann’s five-point day. McCann and Ryan now share the team lead with six goals, while Baum is the points leader after two games with eight.

Vermont also received two goals from Drew Philie, with Andrew Buckanavage and Nick Bartlett scoring once apiece.

“We moved Bobby Lawrence onto Drew Philie, who is a phenomenal player and has been their leading scorer for the last few years,” Murphy said. “Bobby did a great job in the second half on him, and Gordon kind of settled down and made some big saves when we needed them.”

The Raiders held Vermont to just a pair of scores over the final 30 minutes.

“In the second half, we did a better job of just buckling down and doing the things Coach Starsia talked about all week,” Murphy said. “We didn’t have a great scout on them because they had not played, but Coach Starsia did a great job of motivating our guys in the second half.”

Colgate finishes its three-game New England swing next Saturday with a trip to Dartmouth.
