{"id":43592,"date":"2013-03-16T12:08:09","date_gmt":"2013-03-16T16:08:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=43592"},"modified":"2013-03-16T09:10:23","modified_gmt":"2013-03-16T13:10:23","slug":"sernett-to-present-farm-march-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=43592","title":{"rendered":"Sernett to Present \u2018Farm\u2019 March 21"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cazenovia Public Library news<\/p>\n<p>(Cazenovia, NY &#8211; March 2013<a href=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Cazenovia-library-new.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-42437\" alt=\"Cazenovia library new\" src=\"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Cazenovia-library-new.jpg\" width=\"226\" height=\"96\" \/><\/a>) All are invited to join Dr. Milton Sernett in the Cazenovia Public Library Community Room Thursday, March 21, at 7 p.m. for a discussion of his newest book Farm: A Walk through Agricultural History with Jared Van Wagenen, Jr.<\/p>\n<p>Readers will remember Sernett\u2019s most recent presentation at the library entitled The Great American Tractor Wars.\u00a0 Now in Farm, Sernett continues his lifelong interest in agricultural history by taking a walk through the changing historical landscape of American agriculture with the late Van Wagenen as his guide and mentor.<\/p>\n<p>Van Wagenen (1871-1960) lived at Hillside Farm in Schoharie County and was known as \u201cthe Sage of Lawyersville.\u201d\u00a0 In his lifetime, he witnessed the advance of mechanized farming and the eventual dominance of corporate agriculture.\u00a0 A self-proclaimed \u201cdirt farmer\u201d with the gifts of a philosopher, he championed the family farm and an agricultural civilization where human values were prized over profit.<\/p>\n<p>His book The Golden Age of Homespun is an American classic.<\/p>\n<p>A Cazenovia resident, Sernett grew up in Iowa and taught at Syracuse University for three decades.\u00a0 In his retirement, his interest in agricultural history has produced 15 books, including ones on the transition from horse to tractor farming, the history of cheese making in New York state and the origin of the Holstein breed of dairy cattle in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors to the library do not want to miss the \u201cGolden Age of Homespun\u201d lobby display.
