<\/a>) The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced 1950s welterweight champion\u00a0Tony DeMarco\u00a0and Hall of Fame welterweight champion\u00a0Carlos Palomino\u00a0will return to Canastota for festivities planned for the 24th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Weekend set fo rJune 6 to 9.<\/p>\n\u201cDuring the 1950s, Tony DeMarco provided boxing fans with many memorable moments that are still talked about today,\u201d said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. \u201cWe are very excited about welcoming him back to Canastota for the big weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n
The fighting pride of Boston, \u00a0DeMarco\u00a0was born Jan. 14, 1932. He turned pro in 1948 and captured the world welterweight title from Johnny Saxton in 1955. During his career, DeMarco fought eight world champions and registered wins over Paddy DeMarco, Wallace \u201cBud\u201d Smith, Kid Gavilan and Don Jordan among others. He also defeated top contenders Chico Vejar and Gaspar Ortega. DeMarco retired in 1962 with a professional record of 58-12-1 (33 KOs).<\/p>\n
DeMarco will be one of the featured stars at the\u00a0Night of Welterweight Warriors\u00a0on Friday, June 7.<\/p>\n
\u201cCarlos Palomino was a key player in the talent rich welterweight division of the 1970s,\u201d said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. \u201cWe\u2019re thrilled that he will return to \u2018Boxing\u2019s Hometown\u2019 to participate in Hall of Fame Weekend events.\u201d<\/p>\n
Born in Mexico and raised in California,\u00a0Palomino\u00a0was All-Army welterweight champion in 1971 and 1972 before turning pro in 1972. He won the WBC welterweight title from John H. Stracey (TKO 12) in 1976. He reigned until 1979, successfully defending the crown seven times. Managed by Jackie McCoy, Palomino compiled a 31-4-3 (19 KOs) record that includes wins over Armando Muniz and Dave \u201cBoy\u201d Green. In retirement, Palomino, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004, has found success as an actor, appearing in many movies, television shows and plays. He is currently filming the independent film\u00a0Callejero\u00a0in Mexico.<\/p>\n
