Recipients of this year\u2019s award have an overall grade point average of 3.8 and records of significant contributions to their campuses and communities. SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher presented the awards at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center.<\/p>\n<p>Abby Black, a Liberal Arts &amp; Sciences: Social Science major, is captain of the Women\u2019s Softball Team and is a first team All-American, All-Region, and All-Conference selection. She did an internship with the Lewis County Opportunities non-profit agency and worked with low-income families providing them with food, clothing and other household necessities.<\/p>\n<p>Physical Therapist Assistant major Shane Delameter is president of the Physical Therapy Assistant Club. He was the assistant head coach for Little League Baseball and volunteers at various campus events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students we honor today have strong records of achievement as student leaders, scholar athletes, aspiring artists, and community volunteers,\u201d said Chancellor Zimpher. \u201cBy exhibiting excellence in class, on campus, and in their local communities, these students truly represent the power of SUNY and we honor them with great pride. Congratulations to all the students being recognized today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Chancellor\u2019s Award for Student Excellence was created in 1997 to recognize students who have best demonstrated, and have been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvement, or career achievement.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, campus presidents establish a selection committee, which reviews exemplary students. Nominees are then forwarded to the Chancellor\u2019s Office and are subject to a second round of review. Finalists are then recommended to the Chancellor to become recipients of the award.
