With the victory, Colgate clinched its third straight Patriot League Tournament berth and eighth bid in the event’s 10-year history.

Peter Baum scored three goals and provided the halftime bark that led to the Raiders’ second-half bite.

“I was frustrated,” said Baum, whose hat trick was No. 34 of his vaunted career. “I missed a shot or two early on that I thought I should have had, but overall I hadn’t been too involved. And we had been turning the ball over too quickly and having trouble getting from offense to defense.

“At halftime, I kind of ripped into the guys and said this is not how we are going to go out. Something needed to change.”

That something was the Fisher Stadium scoreboard, which read 5-4 Lafayette at the half but changed to 8-5 Raiders by the 13:03 mark of the third quarter. Baum tallied his first right before intermission, and then scored Colgate’s first and third markers of the second half.

Baum now has team-highs of 33 goals and 45 points this season.

“We came out and got some quick ones,” Baum said. “I wanted to be a little more aggressive and we shot it a little better in the second half. Obviously, 10 goals in the second half as opposed to four in the first half; we turned it on.”

Lawrence Shows His Range

Lafayette rallied to forge an 8-8 tie later in the third, but Eric Foote and Brendon McCann picked up goals in the final 2:33 of the period to reestablish Colgate’s lead heading to the fourth. Foote and McCann joined Baum on the hat-trick parade list as Colgate improved to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League.

Just 36 seconds into the fourth quarter, Bobby Lawrence provided the eventual winning goal when he scored in transition from the midfield stripe. It was Lawrence’s first goal of the season and third of the defenseman’s career, but it wasn’t planned.

“They were playing a 10-man ride where their goalie leaves the net to cover somebody,” Lawrence said. “I was going to try and dodge a guy and find someone to pass to, but nobody came to me and I just decided to shoot it from the 50 (yard line).”

The junior’s rifle-shot from about 130 feet out found nothing but net.

“I can’t believe it went in, although I probably should work on celebrating better,” Lawrence said with a laugh. “I was right there by our bench and just let them go crazy.”

Lawrence also went nuts in the ground-ball column, grabbing a career-high eight of Colgate’s 23 for the day and sparking the Raiders transition efforts on several occasions. The previous career best for Lawrence was seven ground balls last month at Cornell.

“Bobby was very good,” Raiders head coach Mike Murphy said. “He struggled a little bit last week off the ground but came back with a vengeance. He sparked our transition on a couple of goals today.”

Colgate forced 17 Lafayette turnovers while committing only 13.

“To see our transition game start to pick its spots a little bit was good for us,” Murphy said. “We made a living on those last year and they’ve been few and far between this year. My hope is we can start to generate some more scoring opportunities in transition as we get into the Patriot League Tournament.”

That four-team affair takes place April 26 and 28 at Lehigh, which defeated Bucknell 11-7 Friday night in Lewisburg, Pa., to clinch to No. 1 seed and hosting duties. Bucknell and Colgate have qualified, with the final berth decided next Saturday when Army visits Holy Cross.

Holy Cross with a win would be locked into the fourth seed, but Colgate, Bucknell and Army could all finish second through fourth based on the final weekend’s outcomes.

“I’m glad we’re in the tournament,” Murphy said. “I’m not satisfied because I still don’t think we’ve played our best 60 minutes. This team is still a work in progress. We’re still trying to make sure we’re playing Colgate lacrosse the right way. We still have a lot of work to do.”

Foote Moving Fast

Colgate broke on top to start the game with a pair of midfielder goals inside the first six minutes. Jimmy Ryan scored his 15th of the season off an assist from Foote with 12:47 showing on the clock. And then Matt Clarkson scored his ninth unassisted straight away from 45 feet out to make it 2-0 Raiders.

Foote went from making his collegiate debut 21 days ago in Baltimore – in an NFL stadium, no less – to scoring twice the following week against Army. Saturday, he earned his first Raiders start and responded with his first collegiate hat trick.

“I’m definitely trying to improve every day, but I’ve also been put in really good positions to succeed,” Foote said. “There are a lot of really good players around me, and that’s the key.”

The Greenwich, Conn., freshman found out Monday he was drawing the starting nod in midfield. He just wanted to do his part for the senior class in Saturday’s key tilt.

“Everyone realized how important the game was,” Foote said. “This game meant so much to our seniors that everyone picked it up and began working as a team. That’s the kind of energy we need for the full 60 minutes.”

Lafayette scored three straight goals spilling over into the second period before Ryan Walsh re-tied the score on his 29th of the season wrapping around from behind the net. Lafayette pushed its lead to 5-3 with goals one minute apart midway through the second quarter, but Baum trimmed the margin to one with a bounder past Lafayette’s Jake Hyatt with 2:48 left before half.

Colgate’s flurry to open the third quarter saw Baum, Foote, Baum again and then Walsh find the net in the first 1:57. After Foote and McCann connected to end the period and Lawrence hit from downtown to start the fourth, Foote added his third of the day and McCann goals No. 14 and 15 for the season to conclude the scoring.

Aiding the cause all day was Robert Grabher, who finished 20-of-27 on draws to keep the Raiders offense cooking.

“They weren’t able to gain any momentum because Robbie was able to dominate at the face-off X,” Murphy said. “It’s something we’ve been in need of as we get ready for a talented Bucknell team. Hopefully that can carry over for next Saturday.”

Shots were 47-34 in favor of Colgate. The Raiders converted 13-of-14 clears to Lafayette’s 15-of-17. Colgate also was 1-of-2 on extra-man opportunities, while allowing the Leopards to convert 2-of-6 on their man-up tries.

Lafayette dropped to 3-9 overall and 0-5 in the Patriot League.

Senior Day is next for the Raiders when they host Bucknell in a Saturday noon start. The game is being televised by the CBS Sports Network.

“It’s good to know you have a couple of more games,” Baum said. “You’re only guaranteed 14 as a senior and you want to play as long as you can, so it feels good to get that.

“But we’ve got a lot of work to do. We’ve got a good Bucknell team coming in and we’ll be excited for that. A win would be huge, not only for our seeding but also to have two wins and some momentum going in. That’s what this week is going to be all about.”

Colgate 14, Lafayette 10

Colgate (8-4, 3-2): Peter Baum 3-1, Eric Foote 3-1, Brendon McCann 3-0, Ryan Walsh 2-0, Jimmy Ryan 1-2, Matt Clarkson 1-0, Bobby Lawrence 1-0.
