{"id":45618,"date":"2013-05-03T08:00:17","date_gmt":"2013-05-03T12:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=45618"},"modified":"2013-05-02T16:46:50","modified_gmt":"2013-05-02T20:46:50","slug":"the-american-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madisoncountycourier.com\/?p=45618","title":{"rendered":"\u2018The American Experience\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chorale pays tribute to early folk, country, spiritual, jazz and patriotic music<\/p>\n<p><em>Chorale members Norm Webber of Canastota (left) and Valerie Wood of Rome (right) discuss their concert solos with Chorale Director Kimberly Nethaway of Rome (center).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Oneida, NY- May 2013<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Norm-Kim-Val-1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-45619\" alt=\"Norm, Kim, Val 1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Norm-Kim-Val-1.jpg?resize=226%2C170\" width=\"226\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Norm-Kim-Val-1.jpg?w=226&amp;ssl=1 226w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/madisoncountycourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Norm-Kim-Val-1.jpg?resize=150%2C112&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><\/a>) The Oneida Area Civic Chorale will present \u201cThe American Experience\u201d on Sunday May 19 at 4 p.m. at the Kallet Civic Center, 159 Main St. Under the direction of Kimberly Nethaway of Rome, the 100-voice community chorus will perform American folk music, spirituals, Broadway tunes, jazz and patriotic songs, all served up with a slice of all-American apple pie.\u00a0 The chorus will be accompanied by pianists Bernadette VanValkenburg of Sherrill and Heather O\u2019Connell of Oneida.<\/p>\n<p>The concert of American music will begin with a medley of folk music titled \u201cAmerican Tapestry,\u201d arranged by Ed Lojeski.\u00a0 \u201cSkip to My Lou,\u201d \u201cOld Dan Tucker,\u201d \u201cSweet Betsy From Pike\u201d and \u201cShenendoah\u201d will provide reminders that there was fun to be had during the difficult days of the settling of our country, as well as the feelings of the settlers as they engaged in the westward expansion of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The Chorale will perform several traditional spirituals including \u201cThis Little Light of Mine\u201d and a medley titled \u201cSwingin\u2019 With the Saints,\u201d both arranged by contemporary American composer Mark Hayes.\u00a0 The group will also sing \u201cAmazing Grace,\u201d one of the most well-known of all folk hymns and one of the most recognizable songs in the English-speaking world.<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate\u00a0American country music, the women of the Chorale will perform a rendition of \u201cI Fall to Pieces,\u201d the Hank Cochran\/Harlan Howard tune made famous in 1961 by the Queen of Country Music, Miss Patsy Cline. The 1951 hit \u201cHey, Good Lookin,\u2019\u201d written and recorded by the legendary Hank Williams, will be offered by the men of the Chorale, with a solo by Norm Webber of Canastota.<\/p>\n<p>What could be more American than a chorus of children singing Disney songs?\u00a0 A group of 20 \u201cChorale Kids,\u201d along with their Chorale-member relatives and friends will perform \u201cA Disney Silly Sing-along\u201d including \u201cBibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo,\u201d \u201cHakuna Matata\u201d and \u201cChim Chim Cher-ee.\u201d Following this lively segment, the audience will have a chance to get into the spirit of the afternoon by participating in a good old American sing-a-long.<\/p>\n<p>Soloist Steve Fisher of Canastota will lead off a salute to American composer George M. Cohan with \u201cYankee Doodle Dandy\u201d and \u201cYou\u2019re a Grand Old Flag.\u201d\u00a0 Harold Arlen\u2019s \u201cOver the Rainbow\u201d will feature a solo by Valerie Wood of Rome, and Tina Moreau-Jones of Utica will solo on the Gershwin tune \u201cNice Work If You Can Get It.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Chorale will take the audience \u201cWay Down Yonder in New Orleans\u201d before heading to New York\u2019s Great White Way for a Broadway salute consisting of several tunes from the choral medley \u201cMade in the USA,\u201d arranged by Mac Huff.\u00a0 American composer Irving Berlin\u2019s classic, \u201cGod Bless America,\u201d will bring the afternoon\u2019s musical program to a close, but The American Experience will continue with an apple pie reception catered by Elaine Clark\u2019s La Vie Boheme Bistro, 109 Madison St. Oneida.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets for \u201cThe American Experience\u201d are $10, with students 12 and under admitted free.\u00a0 Tickets are available from Chorale members, at W.J.
