(Verona, NY \u2013 May 13, 2013) Fred \u201cFritz\u201d Scherz, Jr., Councilman on the \"JenniferMeganFritz\"<\/a>\"JennaFritz\"<\/a>Verona Town Board in\u00a0Verona,\u00a0NY, announced that he has selected Megan Centore of Durhamville as the grand prize winner and Jenna Dunne of\u00a0Verona\u00a0as the runner up for the 4th\u00a0Annual\u00a0Fred Scherz Sr. Memorial Scholarship for Volunteer Community Service.<\/p>\n

Centore has volunteered for the Humane Society, where she assisted with the care of dogs and cats and helped place lost dogs back with their owners. She also volunteered to help R-Cats, by attending events and leading fundraising efforts.\u00a0 In addition, she volunteered at the Verona Food Pantry, and assisted families in need.<\/p>\n

As winner of this award, Centore received a certificate of accomplishment and a check for $250.<\/p>\n

Dunne has donated items to the Verona Food Pantry on a regular basis, which have helped families in need. \u00a0She also volunteered with elementary intramurals after school, has been in charge of the\u00a0Legion Baseball\u00a0concession stand, and has taken on an active role in her church youth group. As runner up for this award, Dunne received a certificate of accomplishment and a check for $50.<\/p>\n

Originally, the scholarship was going to be for $250, all self-funded by Councilman Scherz, and just for one person.\u00a0 However, he received a donation from his good friend of many years, Paul Walrath who wanted to contribute to this year\u2019s scholarship.<\/p>\n

When Councilman Scherz reviewed the applications, he decided to have a grand prize winner and a runner up, since Centore and Dunne were both really stepping up.<\/p>\n

\u201cUpon reviewing Ms. Centore\u2019s application, as well as Ms. Dunne\u2019s, I was quite impressed,\u201d said Scherz.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s obvious Megan and Jenna both care about not only the\u00a0Verona\u00a0community, but the surrounding areas as well, as their volunteer efforts have extended beyond the Town of\u00a0Verona.\u00a0 I thought it was a very unique coincidence that both young women make it a point to help out the Verona Food Pantry, which has become increasingly busier. I congratulate Megan and Jenna for not only winning the awards, but for also setting a great example for others to follow.\u00a0 On a personal note, I know my Dad would\u2019ve been impressed with the volunteer efforts of these two young women!\u201d<\/p>\n
