Rep. Hanna presents Kelly with Army Commendation Medal<\/i><\/p>\n
(Utica, NY \u2013 May 24, 2013) It\u2019s been 60 years since\u00a0Kevin M. Kelly<\/b>\u00a0earned his Army Commendation Medal. Today, he got to hold it for the first time.<\/p>\n
U.S. Representative Richard Hanna\u00a0presented Kelly with the recognition during a ceremony at Utica College in the Economic Crime, Justice Studies and Cybersecurity building at the Carbone Family Auditorium.<\/p>\n
Kelly, 81, was drafted in April 1952 to serve in the U.S. Army. He was deployed from November 1952 through July 1953 to Korea and served with the Medical Company of the 31st Regiment, Seventh Infantry Division. He eventually attained the rank of Sergeant.<\/p>\n
Kelly\u2019s wife, Nancy, discovered the commendation when she came across an old newspaper clipping. Kelly said his mother must have saved the article that appeared in Utica\u2019s Observer-Dispatch newspaper, but she never dated the clipping, leaving him unsure of the year the public announcement appeared.<\/p>\n
He contacted the U.S. Army to inquire about the medal. Unfortunately the documents needed to award Kelly this medal were destroyed in a 1973 fire at the National Personnel Records Center. He then contacted Rep. Hanna who eventually was able to help Kelly rightfully obtain the medal he had earned.<\/p>\n
According to the Army<\/b>, Kelly was awarded the medal for meritorious service in support of military operations, stating: \u201cSergeant Kelly astutely surmounted extremely adverse conditions to obtain consistently superior results. Regardless of the difficulties of terrain and weather, he could always be found in the thick of battle, selflessly administering aid to the wounded. His personal courage served as an inspiration to the fighting men and his hasty application of first aid and efficient evacuation of the wounded, undoubtedly saved the lives of many men, thus preserving the fighting strength of the unit<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSgt. Kelly should have the awards he rightfully earned in service to our nation,\u201d\u00a0Rep. Hanna said. \u201cIt is an honor to be here today.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kelly is an alumnus of Utica College, graduating in 1957. He is the former president of Jay-K Lumber in New Hartford.<\/p>\n
